Rust Prevention

Stripped down an old steel frame so that I could repaint it and build back up into a town bike. Was going to paint it, but after sanding the paint off, i really like the colour of the bear metal, the welds and the brown specks of rust..

Could I just lacquer the frame as it is now, and so it would look the way it does now? And would this prevent the rust from spreading?

Or do i need to do some rust treatment, which then means i'll have to paint the frame

Any advice greatly appreciated.
