In a couple of weeks myself and four (middle-aged) friends are riding from Brentwood to Barcelona for a nine day charity ride, and as someone with very little long distance experience, (i did my first 100 mile sportive last week) i was hoping for a few tips for both the physical and mental side to the ride.

Keep a close eye on your wallet in Barcelona.

I tried to do Leeds-Barcelona a few years ago but gave up in Toulouse after 11 days because it was just too bloody hot to ride down there (it was late June). Some days it was like trying to ride inside a toaster.

    My advice:

    1) Drink lots
    2) Eat as much real food throughout the day as you can (not just energy bars)
    3) Take plenty of rehydration sachets (e.g. dioralyte)
    4) Rub Savlon on your bum every morning before setting off
    5) Wash your shorts every day

Are you self-supporting or do you have a car following you with your kit?

I think 9 days might be a big ask. France is pretty big and you won't be taking the autoroutes.
  • We have two mates following us in a van, and while i know i can do 100 miles in a day, i just wondered what its like to do 110 miles day after day
