Deignan out the back already!!! Too much injury and problems this year. Will have difficulty repeating last year's performance.

Hmm, looking on Twitter, I love the way Kloden even moans about races he's not in. Robbie Hunter is a fan.

They've got quite a few sprinters/lead out men in their team - ideal for this sort of race (rather than TT speciallists)

Nah, just being unpleasant  He's actually really good in TTT and I noticed he crossed the line first looking very serious.

Sky appear to have dropped their GC guy on the first stage. Löfkvist is 175'th overall.

No doubt part of their 'more relaxed attitude' to this race compared to The Tour.

I thought he might be an outsider for the race, given he can cope with the 4,5,6% climbs that make up most of the racing and he's very good on shorter, steeper climbs too. But he's not having a good year, he was racking up plenty of wins at FDJ and HTC.

That is a surprise, this would have been a good race to Lofkvist to show what he's capable of. Guess it frees up Sky to just go for stage wins now.

    Fighting talk from Gilbert:
"I have to lift my level. I am not content to just ride the Vuelta. I will give everything, more than I've done in the past."

"I'm going to give more than I did in the past. I'm going to finish the Vuelta. I think I'll try to go into the red and into the breakaways more often, but not everyday of course. The first days are hilly, so I can try something."

    As for Lovkvist:
"They went off like a train and Thomas just got distanced a little bit on one of the chicanes. That meant he had to fight really hard to get back, which put him into the red and it was hard going for him from then on."

Brailsford added that Marcus Ljungqvist, the main directeur sportif, made the call to wait for Thomas. "He [Löfkvist ] did everything he could to get back on but it was tough for him."

Julian Dean crashed an hour before the start in the warm up and got dropped early which didn't help Garmin's firepower.
