I have a 2010 Specialized Allez 16 that I've done about 300 miles on now. I have a Carbon Seatpost from a Tarmac and a Cateye comp but apart from that its bog standard.

What upgrades would you guys suggest doing first that would provide the greatest improvement to the bike? I will probably get a new bike spring 2011.

:D

If you're getting a new bike in 6 months' time, I'd save the money and spend it on getting better spec on the new bike.

I upgraged the wheels first on my Allez a couple of years ago, but I was planning to keep it as my 'nice' bike. If you absolutely have to upgrade something, I'd start there.

Why on earth would you buy another bike in so short a time?
    Say... That's a nice bike..

    Best thing to do?

Saddle (If you find the one it comes with isn't good for you), pedals, and tyres. Leave it at that until you get a new one in the spring.

Tyres, as the mondo's are rubbish.
  • Best thing to do, is go clipless pedals and shoes, you can the move these to your new bike and they are in my opion the best upgrade you can get for under £100

Takes some practice but after 3 or 4 falls u learn quickly :)

I spent six hours on an Allez 16 today. I had put my own spd's on it but apart from that it was as bought (yesterday!) It is a long story, but basically I am stuck a long way from home for ten days and really needed to get out for a ride.

At home, I normally ride a Spesh Roubaix which is a lovely bike and I was a bit nervous about this one, but I have to say, that for a bike costing a fifth of the price of a Roubaix, it was a good ride.

I probably wouldn't upgrade it at all (until the tyres wear out, which wont take that long). It is good for what it is and for the cost of a branded drivechain, new wheels, a better saddle and handlebars, you could probably afford a Secteur Sport anyway.

I'm going to keep it in the stable with the other three for lending out and occasional use as a spare.

had mine for just over a year now and upgraded the saddle, tyres, chainset (to compact) chain and rear cassette. Otherwise a cracking bike out of the box

New wheels and tyres transformed my 2006 Allez Sport. Even if you intend to buy a new bike in the spring, if you intend to keep the Allez going I think it deserves better wheels. Something like Easton EA50s, Mavic Aksiums or Fulcrums Racing 5s?

I stuck some bling DT Swiss RR1850s on mine after several months, but, even after they were converted for my best bike, a set of Aksiums proofed to be virtually bombproof compared to the supplied Alexrims AT400s.

    Got a Allez 2009
Put SPD's on, then bought a Toupe saddle which I am very pleased with
Then got a set of Kysyrium Elites and some Michelin Pro 3 's which made a lot of difference
Any of the kit transfers easily onto a new bike

... I have an old 06 Allez I use as my winter bike, the route MikeVWV is the best order of upgrade in my opinion
