Headset on a frame I bought 2nd hand is sticky in certain places... Do I just get another complete headset fitted, or work out which model it is, and by new races?...
I think I know the answer!

It depends. If the headset cups (the bits that sit in the frame) are undamaged, then it may be more economical to replace the bearings and races, assuming they're available. However, I'd prefer to change the headset as a whole if it's old, it probably won't cost much more to fit a new cheap headset.

Disassemble the headset and examine the races - if there is corrosion / pitting then they need replacing. Certain models, e.g Campagnolo Record, you can replace the steel inserts, otherewise probably cheaper / quicker to just fit a new one.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
