Bike Punishment.

I live in a nice place for cycling, small roads, nice scenery but near town etc etc HOWEVER, a lot of the roads around here are horrendous with potholes and generally awful surfaces.

So, being new to the game, was wondering how much punishment road wheels, forks, hubs etc should be expected to take?

Lots. I ride Norfolk lanes (similar surfaces) and the bikes still going fine coming up to 30k miles.

Obviously you don't want to hit a deep pothole at speed but otherwise it will be OK.

    Cheers

IME you'll break long before the bike - check out YouTube clips of Forest of Arenberg sector of Paris Roubaix then you'll understand the concept of 'rough' roads - brutal.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • Im 16.5 stone on 700x23's with pretty low end wheels to be fair...

(Frantically touching wood to fend off future backlash to this next statement, although sadly not my own wood!)

So far no broken spokes, wheels running true and only a few big "p" events, usually caused by glass and my previous tyres (which were like riding on inner tubes...)

Had a couple of teeth rattling encounters with pots, usually when riding in a group and the person in front doesnt have time to signal... Each time I thought "There goes a spoke.." but so far not even a judder!

Some people do sit on their bikes like sacks of spuds though - but if you keep an eye on where you are going, and can pick a decent line - you should be fine. I think all the roads round the UK are pretty crappy this year.
