i might be being made redundant, they're laying off technicians (plural) from our branch. there's only 4 of us who are techs here so it's at least a 50% chance it'll be me  :(

the problem is that my job is quite specialised and i know most people locally who i could possibly work for, so lying wouldn't help me

Good luck, both me and the wife have been there in the past few years. Stay optimistic and start looking for new jobs sooner rather than later :D

Snap, my job is also specialised and I'm not really qualified to do anything else.

Have 2 possible plans if I go:

    1) Be brave, set up alone and consult
    2) Rent out my house, go fly for an airline in the summer, and go to the mountians in the winter and work out what to do when I'm done having fun!

This is the second time in 12 months I have had to deal with a redundancy threat. Thing is, I actually MAKE money, but, if the consultant loses their job, there is no job for me as there is nobody to develop our projects.

    what do you do?

I work in Primary Schools supporting attainment and achievement tracking. I work with a software our team developed and maintain. So I would have to get the software re-written and market it. Have potential clients though, lost of enqiries coming in from all over the country but the council would not allow is to follow this through in our current role.

been part of the mainly unemployed club for a while now, things were looking good at the LBS, but its gone super quiet and funds seem pretty tight, so ive been told that they cant take me on full time :( i still have weekends tho, which isnt too bad, but im gonna need to find something else to pay for the rest of my cytech training and new bike, cos £30 a day just aint gonna cut it :(

thankfully though i still have that little bit of money unlike others, so im grateful for that :)

Am I right in thinking you're an AV Technician?

Where I work, a job for a Studio Technician has just ended today. Tomorrow I have to sort through the applications and I've been told that there are about 150!!! This isn't a particularly well paid job, and it's on a 12 month contract.

People are applying for any job going, it's a terrible thing to be unemployed at the moment.

Good luck mate! I really do hope it works out well for you!

Think of redundancy as an opportunity to do something new, hell it sucks a fat one big time being made redundant (been there 3 times)

I used to have a job that paid the bills, I could do the work easily, but it was no fun. now I have a job that pays the bills & is freaking awesome

Good luck & I hope y'all find something that you enjoy doing too.

It's a sign of the times and anyone going through this has my sympathies, it's the uncertainty that eats people up.

I've just taken voluntary redundancy too.
My last day is August 31st, I got my redundancy based payslip today and yes the payout was okay as I've been there for a decade but not quite what I'd classify as brilliant due to being paid the bare minimum amounts.
The company has asked me to stay on for another two weeks (Sept. 17th) which is a bonus as it's some additional income until I disappear on holiday on the 29th.

The bottom line is that there are jobs out there for us all, irrespective of what we do for a living. It takes gonads and guts to work for yourself though. I do prefer the "comfort" of a monthly income myself, so self employment is off the radar for me..

I'm just too disorganised to go self employed, I'd rather have other people look after the housekeeping and admin side of things.
It can work great for people though, if you're up to the task.
