Hi All,

Similar to Bitten by the bugs post, although im not doing a century. Have entered the challenge tour ride which is a 75km route from honiton to teignmouth. Ive taken up cycling also in the last year where i cycle commute to work on average depending which office im in, about 15 miles a day 7.5 each way on a very flat route. i cycle 5 days a week and at weeknd , although the max i have been so far is 2 35 milers, all v flat and found no diffulcty goign a steady pace.

Am just concnered that the are a few hills which looks pretty steep. The amoutn of climbinhg im told is 1050m. Having not eneterd any of these types of events before - can someone let me know if its ok to get off and walk, if the hill was too steep / too tough? Im reasonalbly fit having been on the bike for the last year but when there is a long sustained hill, i really struggle for breath, in th elowest gear and have on occasions, whecmn cyclign near home have had to stop at certain points on the hioll to cath my breath before strating up again. Is this going to be allowed on the tour? Does anyone know the route? there looks a point on the map as if the climb is vertical !!

Cheers in advance for any advice.

If you stop and walk, you'll be arrested and / or issued with a £60 FPN for not being hard enough. Probably.

Walk if you have to. Adopt a pronounced limp, remove the chain from the front ring to effect mechanical failure, let the rear tyre down, whatever if you think you need to justify walking to those who sail past at 17mph on a 53/12.

Does the ability to suffer on a bike make a cyclist, some would say yes.
I suffered on the last two sportives, and will again on Sunday no doubt.
You will push yourself alot harder due to the occasion of the day, just enjoy it,eat well, drink enough, youll be fine.
If you get off,so what you dont know these people, but I would advise standing and having a breather rather than walking up the hill.
    good luck
