Intelligence has reached it's limit, if the human brain becomes any larger, communication between parts of the brain actually slows down .. fascinating .. discuss :-)

We only use a very small portion of our brains
  • something like 5% isnt it? .. such a waste....

I thought we only use a small portion consciously, and a bigger portion subconsciously but we still don't use it all. It is a waste, if we could use it all, think of the what could be achieved...

is that for men or women?
  • I'd love to access my sub concious  . although apparently if we used more than 60% of our brains for any length of time, our body would overheat and we'd die .. freaky!

Doesn't it depend on the synapse, or other bikes with a similar name?

That's actually a myth. I could be wrong, my brain certainly doesn't run full capacity for memory, but I think it was Freud that said that. But it's since been debunked, what with brain scans and whatnot.

It's a fascinating subject though, what the brain is capable of. We clearly don't use anywhere near the full processing power consciously, but it's said that it's there unconsciously. Supposedly we all have rain-man-esq abilities, but only the information that has proved useful through evolution is filtered through to the conscious mind. Otherwise it'd be way to much stimulus and we'd all be, well, severely autistic.

I also remember reading that Neanderthals had bigger brains than ourselves. whether that's true or not, I'm not entirely sure.

At a time. Different bits of the brain do different things. No point wasting energy firing neurons in the section responsible for speech when you're pedalling a bike

Yes, but what if you're like me and talk to yourself a lot?

They had bigger frontal lobes than us (hence the wierd foreheads) which gives them far better memories. I don't think they were overall more intellegent though.

The 10% thing is of course utter bollocks, human beings use pretty much all of their brains most of the time.

However, most of this usage concerns the basic autonomic functions of life. Sadly, in most people almost none of the brain is used to elevate them above the evolutionary level of chimpanzees.
