After going through half a dozen cycle computers (the longest lasting being the Cateye Strada) I've decided to upgrade to a GPS system.

Been looking at Garmin 500 as i don't really need the mapping feature, but was owndering how other contributors have got on with this. I've read nothing but good reports and i think it's the one I'm going to go for unless there are any reasons you lot know not to ?

Biggest appeal is I can use it on any bike, but have differing reports around the cadence sensor. Advice appreciated

I have a 705 and although not a 500, I've not experienced any problems with the cadence sensor. Garmin are renowned for being over optimistic with their calorie counter feature, but that's all I've heard.
I ride a bike. Doesn't make me green or a tree hugger. I drive a car too.

I've never had a problem with the candence sensor either, Indeed it's hard to think what problem you could have that aren't just down to how you fit it. There's only one button on it to reset it and everything else is automatic.

i have a 500. love it! had it for the past 3 months and the only issue i have had is from a couple of bizarre heart-rate readings (but this happens with all hrms from time to time). cadence is simple to set up and very useful.

    fantastic value for money.

I believe that there's a glitch in the latest firmware release on the Edge 500 that means its not using the speed sensor properly (see the Garmin forums for more info), but it doesn't appear to be a problem for everyone and I'm sure Garmin will sort it for the next firmware release.
    More problems but still living....
