Currently selling a pair of these wheels - I used a 10 speed set-up on them but a chap who is interested wants to know if the hub is 10 speed only or indeed 8/9/10 compatible.

Anybody out there who happens to know the answer?

Thanks

I think they are 10spd only but I'm not 100%

if the freehub body is aluminium and has tall splines then its 10spd only?

Agreed, if it's alu with tall splines it will be 10sp only - but question is if WH-7801 are !

This convoluted thread talks all round the issue, but there's a guy at the bottom saying that he uses 7801's with a SRAM cassette (shich requires shorter splines like Shimano 8 or 9sp) http://www.bikeforums.net/archive/index ... VdpuExfBaQ
    - dunno though if I'd believe anything I read on a thread like that !

But this thread http://forums.roadbikereview.com/showthread.php?t=72237 has someone saying get 7850's instead as they have Ti freehub and so will run 9sp - implication being 7801's won't...

Obvious answer is to try a 8sp or 9sp cassette on and see if it'll fit : if it won't go on because the splines are too tall to fit in the spline-grooves in the cassette, then no it won't fit.

Failing that, cos no 8 or 9sp casette to hand, I guess you could take the 10sp cassette off
    - if there's a thin 1-1.5mm spacer mounted on the hub before the cassette and you can see the splines are shorter than the spline-grooves in the cassette, then it's OK
    - if no spacer and splines are same length as grooves, no it's not

    Sheldon describes it http://www.sheldonbrown.com/dura-ace.html#10
    - he says 7800's are 10sp only, 7850's went to Ti freehubs and are 8/9/10 compatible

Thanks for all the above info - I've got a 9 speed cassette handy so I'll see if that will fit on them tonight.

They are clearly 10 speed only as the 9 speed cassette would not fit onto the hub. Sorry that I didn't try this earlier (did not realise that I had a 9 speed cassette hanging around)

Thanks for all the info as usual.
