Has any one won, by not winning?

It may sound a bit strange, but I've been away on holiday and this has been bugging me.
Has anyone won the Tour de France or any other major tour, by not actually winning any stage, but by consistently being near the front and there for having the quickest overall time.

Contador did not win a stage this year. Others will be along to tell you who else in history did the same.
  • Yup I'm afraid that's one of the easier pub trivia questions.

Contador also won the 2008 Giro in this way, and Oscar Pereiro won the 2006 Tour in this way, to name two more examples of GTs

Apparently only happened 6 times for the Tour. Valverde didn't win a stage in the Vuelta.
    Contador is the Greatest

Don't think Lance won a road stage in 2005 but of course the ITT. Indurain did this 5 times I think? but I may be talking out my ass

Indurain always won at least one stage in every TdF he won, usually a TT

Yeah but my point was he never won a road stage. - at least after 1990?

same could be said of Anqateil who didn't win a road stage in some of his tour wins, they were usually based around the ITT
