  • There is very little MTB to be had around York but within 30 minutes drive you have plenty to see and do

Your going to have to get into the lycra
  • Yeah, York isn't that hilly, however, you're not far from the Peaks, and you're not too far from the moors, both of which have some fantasticle riding in them.

I've heard York has a train line too, but there isn't any evidence of this, so if you're without a car, try finding a train station.

    Try Clifton Cycle Club.
  • The area is pretty damn flat. Which is a shame, you could probably make quite a nice ride alongside the river. There used to be a small section that had been dug out a bit with a few small jumps etc, but havn't been down there in a few years so have no idea of what state it's in, it may even have fallen into the river by now. Marked placemark 2 below

Placemark 1 is a bit with a few small jumps and stuff, fun for a few minutes but again i don't know what state it is in now.

The uni campus itself has a lot of stuff that looks fun to muck about on in a trialsy/bmx type way but security seems pretty tight on skaters and bmxers who are mucking about up there so don't know how feasable that is.

On the otherhand, there is the moors and Dalby about a 40 minute drive away if you have transport. I am sure if you talk to the right people there will be some stuff around, at least some dirt jumps - by the sounds of it there are some at Escrick which isn't too far down the road.

I only really started taking up biking just before i went to uni and as such never really explored too much around the city, I probably should considering i can never be arsed to keep driving up to the moors.

This, I am a member and we run a weekly evening ride on a Wednesday night and we try to do a weekend ride each month.

There is always someone able to give a lift as well.

I went to York Uni, the campus is good for a blast on a trials bike if the porters don't get you! Join the Athletic Union, they had a MTBing club.

Try the train station, they've got one. So have the National Railway Museum. Ask there.
  • I know. Everyone in York seems to mention nothing else other than the train station and how good it is.

Get on the rides section and the hulll and surrounding area, theres always someone out and about, be it local or moors.

Can't remember the last time i mentioned the station apart from now. I normally talk about the amount of pubs we have! Fkin hundreds, makes up for the lack of a decent night out, a pub crawl always works.

I'm moving to Strensall, 6 miles out from York in a few days actually, moving down from Cumbria. I've heard theres a few bridlewaqys around, but not much XC, and even less DH stuff! The trails are amazing here in the Lakes, it'l be a shame to move from it really. I did the AMR 100 cycle ride on the road bike a few weeks ago, the areas great for road cycling, not sure the MTB will get much use though, except for trips out in the car to Dalby! Let me know if you find anything good to ride around the city mate! Strensall commons supposed to be OK, and theres a motocross track right behind it (bit of tresspassing never hurts!)

Strensall is where the barracks are, isn't it? An ex of mine worked down there for a short while. Definitely a bit of single track around - it's in the middle of nowhere - but not many hills that I remember.

The lakes is only 2 hours away (when driving at legal speeds  )

Also the Howardian Hills. Not quite the same as the Lakes/Moors/Dales etc but I'm sure that there will be some ok riding to be had there, nothing too techincal or special though i wouldn't have thought.

Or there is the Wolds. Google Maps seems to show some good tracks. They are mostly footpaths but if your not bothered by that.

Thinking about it I am so dissapointed with myself for not having gone out there and made some routes for myself. It's only about a 15 minute drive.

Hello i just some how came across this post and though join in. Yeah not much to ride in York but i ride bit urban freeride and just ride around looking for things to play haha but good stuff short travel distance and even all i dont have a car i some times get lifts or go by train to areas.

If any one in York fancies a ride around i can string a loop together off mix bridle paths and other little trails together.

I wouldn't, the railway is famous for employing mongs who know nothing about railways

if in doubt ask a policeman
