Mudgaurds clip on vs, eyelet fix

Given the recent wet weather, and a soaking this weekend, a quick quesiton re: mudguards

I have been looking at some crud mark 2 clip on mudgaurds, but I have a Giant Defy 2 which has eyelets for more "permanent" muguards.

I wondered whether having eyelets means that I can choose a more robust mudguard that will be better than the crud mark 2 clip on road mudguards (which seem to get a pretty good write up).

BTW - tyres are 23mm continental gatorskins.

Any thoughts / help appreciated........

Russ

Giant make some that are specific to the Defy

    These would be my preference.

Thanks - is that advice based on using on a Defy, or more a good piece of logical advice?

The reason I ask is that i have read mixed reports on the Giant mudguards

No, it is just based on experience using permanent mudguards versus clip on ones (both SKS). The Crud ones may be better but I still expect they would be susceptible to knocks and rubbing. The Giant ones should obviously fit your bike very well, but if SKS Chromoplastics (p35's) go on then they are a possibility.

I have heard that although you have the eyelets, you don't have the clearance for 'proper' mudguards, so the Giant specific ones or the Cruds are your best options.

Yes, the Giant ones seem to have cutouts around the fork/brake.prod_22039.jpg

Giant SCR takes SKS mudguards with 23mm or 25mm tyres. I'd expect that the same goes for the Defy.

Having said that the Cruds are great. Unless you fit huge mudflaps to your guards the Cruds will work as well as the full guards. I've had no problems at all with Cruds rubbing and I can't see why they'd be susceptible to knocks either.
    More problems but still living....

Beware buying the non specific mudguards, I got some crud roadracers for my Defy1 and they wont fit as there's no clearance around the brakes. I suspect if I swapped my 25 tyres for 23's they might but it's £20-30 wasted if they don't. Alternatively it's a good excuse to get a different bike for the wet :D
If you buy it, they will come...

...up to you and say, you didn't want to buy one of them!!!

Roadracer mk1 fit fine on my defy 2. That's with 25mm bontrager race light tyres. I'd avoid the defy guards, mine broke at the cut outs. Also the defy guards caused grit to be thrown into the brake callipers leading to lots of annoying maintenance.

Just to add, the roadracer Mk 2 fit well (with a bit of hacksaw work to the front of the rear guard) and if you drill a hole in the guard you can use the Defy guard's bolt on the seat tube.
