The joys of redundancy!.....A new bike!

At last I'm being made redundant and the pay-off is great! So needless to say I'll be getting a new ride! :-)

I race and ride XC so want a light, agile full-suss (I guess with 4 or 5in travel) - but what would you choose?

I'm looking at the Yeti ARC Carbon or a Scott - but is there anything I'm missing? (I don't want another Spesh as I've had one for years and fancy a change).

Any help is gratefully appreciated.

Yours, soon to be unemployed!

Ash

^This. If you can't get another job for a while a new shiney bike won't help pay the bills and won't be worth what you paid.

I was made redundent in early March but I didn't get much of a payout as the comapny went under (hell I didn't even get what I was owed), I only went back to work 5 weeks ago, while I was off I put in plenty of miles but I'm not one of these people who can enjoy being out of work (family n all that).

Now many times at work I just think/dream about being out on the bike, before i just though about getting back into work, just can't win can you, if you can afford it then I say do it and try and enjoy the free time.

Wow, are you all his personal accounts who know exactly what he can financially afford etc?

If he feels he can afford a new bike, then he can do so, you lot telling him to get a job isn't going to do sh*t.

No doubt he wants a new job....

I have been made redundant 4 times.

My advice test ride them, buy one, ride and then look for a job in the new year.

    You only live once.

Let's be straight about something eh, there is no joy in redundancy.

I was laid off march 09. Paid a few grand for my troubles. Great. New bike then.

Seems a good idea till it sets in that you don't actually have anything coming in to replace anything you spend. The vast amount of time you have to yourself seems utter heaven, until it starts to wear a but thin. Which doesn't take long believe me.

A wise man would keep the money, find another job and buy a new bike on their cycle to work scheme or with your now spare cash.

If you've not been laid off yet make sure you ask for a PILON arangement.

Wow, you do have serious issues there don't you!

Been made redundant once and was damned glad I kept every penny until I knew I had another job

Okay, without wanting to say if buying a bike when you've been made redundant is right or wrong....
Yeti ASR, maybe ASR 5? I'd have thought a Mojo is a bit too much bike for XC racing/riding only.

Scott Spark, I demoed one and really liked it, sounds spot on for what you want

    Trek Top Fuel?

    A Cannondale somethingorother?

Santa Cruz Blur XC Carbon? Depends on budget really.

That depends it's so easy to get stuck in a job you hate and stay there because you don't have the heart to leave.

For me it was one of the best things that has happened and set me on a different life path.

It all happens for a reason and there is always a positive side to be taken from it.

In my 18 months off I never got bored once, but that's just me.

ok, i didn't see the thread going down this route when i started it! :(

I do already have another job to go to and apologies if I've offended anyone regarding the "Joys of........"! That wasnt intentional!

Now, back to bikes!........Mmm, the trek might be a good idea? Anyone know how light it is?
  • Redundancy was a life changer for me as well.

Fortunately I left on the Friday and started another job on the Monday. With the redundancy I bought a new bike and did some MTB courses with the 're-training' allowance.

I have just started up a new business with the MIAS and Cytech qualifications gained.

It can be good to get redundancy...but depending on your personal circumstances I'd look for a new job as a priority.

Then again if you've got £100k coming in for your inconvenience then what the hell....
