Winter riding kit

As the prospect of the nights drawing in gets ever closer I'm preparing to face my first winter as a cyclist.
By the time we reachthe depths i get home too late to go out because pitch black country lanes are a recipie to get killed round here. However, I'm still planning on getting out at the weekends for at least one ride a weeek unless snow covers the ground.
What i do want a bit of advice on though is winter gear that'll really help me out. So far i' positive i need gloves and overshoes because my extremities tend to get cold first. A decent pair of bib longs are on the list too and I already have a windproof which when combined with a long sleeve and a base layer I anticipate meeting all weathers (i run pretty hot anyway).
Any other suggestions for winter essentials?

The bike's fine, it's the engine that needs an upgrade.

As you say gloves and overshoes are key as hands/feet tend to feel it first. Gloves, when it gets really cold, you want two layers (I usually go for a silk liner and a normal insulated waterproof outer glove, although I also have a Spesh defroster that comes as a two part glove anyway but it's slightly more bulky). If it's extremely cold you can also try some latex mechanics gloves between the two layers (your hands will get hot fast like that though). Overshoes I'd get some Lusso max repels for now (splash proof and a bit of insulation) and some Tarmac nbu pro neoprene overshoes for when it's properly cold, get some decent merino cycling socks to (make sure they aren't too thick or you'll probably cut off circulation to your feet and make things worse), woolie boolies are pretty good.
Head I usually have a buff or skull cap on (depending on cold/rain), occassionally use a balaclava instead but usually stay indoors if it gets that cold Body I'll have a merino baselayer and then normally either just a Gore Phantom or Endura Stealth softshell over it (again depending on how cold/wet it is), if that's not warm enough it usually means the roads will be iced or snowed over so I don't go out anyway. Legs is bib tights but for really cold days I use ones with a windproof front panel and thermal insulation0
