Headset Problems.

Hi folks,
Need some advise on a fairly simple problem but it one thats getting on my wick a bit.
In May I got a Mongoose Tyax Super on the C2W scheme, on collecting the bike i was advised that the Headset fitted to it was not the best in the world and that they are occasionally coming loose (?) causing a 'clunking' in the head when you brake. I was advise that it's not a recall problem as it only seems to be affecting some bikes and is not dangerous. After a few months of riding mine did start making the noise and was promptly returned and a new headset was fitted however i think the replacement may be coming loose as it feels like the fork is rocking slightly when i brake.
So... should I get the dealer to fit (another cheap and cheerful Mongoose) headset or spend a some money getting a better headset and ask them to fit if FOC for the trouble? If upgrade what do people recommend, I ride 50% commuting and 50% local trails and bridleways.

Have you adjusted it? Is a simple job.
Maks sure it is not the fork bushings clunking though - cup your hand around the fork seals, apply the front brake and rock the bike back and forth. Can you feel any knocking or movement?0 -
Cheers SS,
In all fairness I'm finding my way round the new kit still, I came from a 15 year old rigid Saracen so any pointers would be much appreciated!!Please help me raise £5k for Diabetes UK by completing a Couch Potato to Ironman challenge.

Park Tools has a guide on headset adjustment.
Put simply, undo the two side stem bolts, adjust the topcap bolt until the play has gone, but the fork still turns smoothly (ie don't overdo it), then tighten up the side bolts again.0 -
Right then, just bumping this one back up as the replacement OEM headset is giving up the ghost again so I might as well fit a better one this time!!
Will this superstar one be man enough for the job? and is there another way of checking the sizing of the headset without pulling the whole thing apart andmeasuring it!!

the SS headsets are good units, but like all units need to be fitted properly. if this is your second, i'd be concerned about the fitting and adjustment of your current headset. like supersonic said, adjust it and see if that solves the current problem.
if you fit a new unit, get the headtube faced so that the the tube ends are paralell as even cheap headsets can get a decent life.0
