I wasn't aware that Belgian steel had any particular properties that made it better for the kaissen than anyone else?
All the Belgian brands I can think off buy their frames from either Italy or Taiwan e.g Merckx, Ridley. Might be worth contacting Interbike / Veloschils - they might be able to point you in the right direction. Alternatively, do like Eddy Merckx and get something from Italy from Mr DeRosa or Mr Colnago?.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • And why would a Belgian want to build a frame for an Englishman with such a hare brained idea?

You know, choosing a frame builder who's first language is English is a good starting point.

    There isn't such a thing.

If you want custom, ask a British framebuilder to build one for you, avoiding the super thin tubing. What you need is a good set of wheels, which will survive the cobbles.

I suggest 32 spokes (maybe even 36 at the back if you're heavy) 3x laced with sensible spokes (2 mm straight gauge or DT competition double butted) on Ambrosio Evolution or Excellence... then 25 mm tyres or Vittoria Pave' 24...

Then you need to learn how to ride aggressively on the pave'...

FWIW most Belgian bikes have a reputation for being 'overbuilt' to suit their roads which can give them a bit of a 'dead' feel if you're lightweight. As Ugo says, wheel / tyre choice and riding style is far more important. The best bike for cobbles IME is a titanium cross bike with 32mm file-tread tubs.

I'm 80-85kg so i'm no lightweight. Overbuilt is what i want as i want it to last. Only asking for belgium builders as something different(work in germany so its on the trip home anyway). I've already got a couple of qoutes from uk builders.

wheels will be record hubs with nemsis rims
