buying my first road bike, probably from my local Evans as they've provided best advice and service, and best value.

Should I choose a Cannondale Caad8 tiagra at £740, or Specialized Allez Elite or Secteur Elite at £799. I get the feeling there is not much in it, and my heart says Cannondale. Any strong opinions?

Cheers

Go with your heart! I've got a CAAD 9 and if the CAAD 8 is is only 1/9th less lovely you are still gonna adore it.

... saying that, it's probably best to take all three for a test ride and then choose the one that you like best (i.e. the Cannondale).

I had one of them red bikes but I don't any more. Sad face.

  • cheers - as a fellow brighton cyclist, do you have any experience of the local shops? Rayment, Sidney St both seem quite MTB focussed to me, and Baker St not a great range of road bikes. And I am impressed with Evans so far. Any opinions?

I like the guys in Rayment... if I'd bought a Specialized I'd've got it there. I ended up getting my CAAD in Essex as Evans wasn't part of my cycle to work scheme. The other bike shops you mentioned seem fine to me... they just didn't sell bikes I was interested in. Once you get your bike, have a look at http://ontherivet.ning.com/ for info about rides and events in and around the Brighton area...

I was going to buy a Fuji Roubaix road bike from Evans a few weeks ago for £699. Test rode one. Very nice, but when it came to the crunch they said my ride to work voucher was not the type of voucher they accepted.

Ended up buying a Cannondale Synapse from a local retailer in Sunderland and can't fault it. Cost about £750 and worth every penny.
