Just started to get some news of 2011 bike prices, i knew they were going up due to global economy, manufacturing costs, banking crisis, exchange rate, cost of milk these days, the alignment of the planets or whatever else they can think of...but some of the hikes seem excessive...manufacturers cashing in on a booming industry??

Examples

Felt F3 2010 - £2500 2011 - £3800
Felt F4 2010 - £2000 2011 - £2500
Felt F5 2010 - £1250 2011 - £1700

(prices taken from www.hargroves.com

There's some pretty hefty increases here (sorry not had a chance to check all the spec and I'm sure that some models will have improved maybe?)

Is this the way all manufacturers will go or is Felt an extreme case? i'm not sure why i'd buy a 2011 Felt over a 2010 without feeling ripped off...?

Comments

  • Remember though - hargroves are selling them at discounted rates to clear stock. I thought the 2010 G5 sold at around 1695
Although you may be right about the f4 and f3
  • yep these were the list prices for 2010 but i think i may have got the F5 wrong...thats still over 20% increase for the f4 and as for the f3 thats a ridiculas rise unless i'm completely missing something...will be interesting to see what other manufacturers do...it does leave some decent bargains out there on 2010 stock if your quick...

The £1000 carbon boardman's are now £1200, with no change at all.
  • There was a big increase from 09 to 10 as well.eg Trek 5.2 Madone 09 = £2500 10 = £2900

    Funny that; I haven't noticed a 20% increase in my take-home pay!

This is why I tend to buy my bikes in the sales. :D

The other thing to consider is that although prices have gone up, you have to check closely on the spec...sometimes you get higher prices with unchanged spec, the worst case is when prices are higher and the wheelset may be one level lower than the previous year.

Paint job aside (which seems to change annually) make sure you have all details to make a true comparison.

Giant have said they're going up by 10% next year across the board. Not quite as bad as last year for them.

even worse the 5 series is now using the TCT Carbon strock from made over in Asia where as it used to be the older 6 model hand built with OCLV carbon from the factory.

The same with the speed concept TT bike now made with TCT Carbon
  • From what I have read, the Felt F3 is a totally different bike from last year. The frame is essentially an improved F1, and the bike is half a kilo or so lighter than the 2010 F3.
