commuting trousers

I'm looking for trousers to commute in through autumn & winter now that shorts are too chilly. Doesn't have to be fully waterproof - hate that sweaty leg feeling with most overtrousers! There seems to be little on the market beyond lycra & overtrousers.. Altura boulder etc seem to be discontinued.

Endura Humvees? Work for me, despite the poor review on BR.

    Montane Terra Pants

They aren't bike specific, nor are they waterproof, but they are bloody excellent :)

Lycra tights and baggies over the top. It's the only way.

I've just purchased the short variations of these trousers, might be worth a look.

another vote for the Humvees. They'll take a shower without leaking, and dry easily if they soak. also comfy with good pockets etc..

Will have to get a lot colder then this before I even think about tights let alone trousers, I was thinking about waterproof shorts after getting soaked the past two rides into work

    +1

It might sound girly but a good pair of fleecy tights (DHB's from Wiggle get my thumbs up) are sooooooo much better than full trousers. Unless you buy waterproof trousers (sweaty yuck) they will be a nightmare in the rain as they will quickly get cold and suck the warmth from your being whereas lycra retains a lot of warmth even when its when as they sit on your skin and prevent warm air being lost. I used a pair of Altura waterproof trousers once, vowed never again and used the lycra tights ever since.

+2. Using Endura MTB shorts and various tights here.

I've been wearing the same Ronhill running trousers every commute, every working day for about 5 years and they're still going strong. When it's sleeting or raining hard I wear overtousers.

Pastie do you live in London

My Humvees are a year round choice & when it does get properly chilly I do as Headhunter and have a pair of full length lycras for underneath, works fine, people barely notice the Max Wall look and none of the constriction of tucking the trousers in or that annoying flappy left trouser leg off the bottle cage or downtube.

as a slightly cheaper (£5-10 IIRC) option, Edinburgh Bicycles Humvee-alikes are a nice cool weather length too, I found them just a little less baggy round the thighs and knees than the hummers.

I found the Endura 3/4 length waterproofs are an excellent compromise with the Humvees

The other alternative is the MT500 Spray

Have a look at the Gore fusion trousers. They are windproof but also keep the rain out for longer than some other trousers.

i just use bog standard aldi cycling tights treated with waterproof spray come November.... any earlier in the year than that and you're best off with just shorts (assuming you have waterproof skin that is)

  • I tried humvee's, but found them far too baggy. Eventually went for montane terra pants, water resistant and quick drying when it buckets. Found them in black (other colours were a bit funky) £57 from https://www.hike-lite.co.uk arrived within 24 hours. I should be able to hide the bib'n'knicks underneath during the winter. Thanks guys!

I use long Fila sports trousers that have been shortened to 3/4 length through winter, exposing enough shin for cooling while keeping the knee's warm. I use Fila sports shorts in summer.
