evening all, soon as i can sort my cycle to work schyme out im ordering my 456 but im trying to decide between the XT build or wheather to order the TRAIL build and upgrade 1 or 2 things. its £200 cheaper and has the same forks but has mainly deore instead of XT.
the trail build gives the option to upgrade each individual part to slx or xt and id like to know which parts are worth upgrading.
also is the XT chainset more prone maybe to chainsuck as i kno its a problem with 456 so id like to pick the best chainset to avoid the problem.
things id really like help on are if the XT brakeset is much more powerfull than deore and if the rear mech is much smoother etc.
ive seen a few ppl saying the shifters are a lot better so i will prob upgrade them for £20.
the brakeset cost bout £130ish to upgrade so if there much better then il prob go for the full XT build.
thanks for reading my essay and for any help :D

since buying my scale which originally had fitted a deore crankset and shifters and an XT rear mech i've gradually upgraded everything to XT. the biggest changes of feeling were from the chainset and the shifters.

i've recently bought an EX8 which has an XT crackset and rear mech and SLX shifters. I have to say that it doesn't feel as crisp as XT throughout...

can't comment on the brakes though as i use juicy3/elixer5

  • a lot of people rave about slx but having tried it over xt its Just not a ptch imo! Xt is just that bit smoother, feels better/tighter as such, shifts are better, is lighter although not a lot but enough, stiffer, just allround better (as you would expect form a groupset up!!) havent tried the brakes though so cant comment on them.
upgrade what you can afford to for Xt, you wont regret it! imo
