Many thanks... so the first climb is 900ft in just over 3.5 miles, sounds like a good challenge! I better get some more miles in.

Yep, it's a nice climb though, interesting without being too challenging, just sit and keep the pedals turning, took 38 minutes on that ride just taking it fairly steady.
  • Yup there is no technically challenging clims at afan so its a just set your pace that you are comforttable with. No problems.

Sorry to hijack the thread but has anyone got any recommendations for places to stay at Afan? Not Afan Lodge though as it is full the weekend me and 3 friends are going.

When I ride at Afan I usually stay at the Bluebell Hotel in Neath, they have secure lock ups in the basement car park for bikes and wet clothes. The car park is a bit small but the rooms are excellant

Thanks. Rooms look good though many reviews talk of the small car park! We will be coming with two cars and 4 bikes so might be an issue. Anyone else got any suggestions?

  • Looks like it's going to rain again tomorrow :(

Weather says light rain, I think I can cope with that, so I'm gonna go for it! :D
  • Done and dusted 8)

It took me quite a while, but it was worth it! The hill wasn't too bad because I was prepared for it, so I just plodded on stopping loads and loads. Because it was a new trail and quite wet, I didn't go flat out on the downs and I did bottle a couple of rocky bits. I was really tired by the end which slowed me down too - but no falls so I'm happy! :D

    Faster next time I hope!

    Way to go, nice one.

The sense of achievement when you get to the final gate and realise you've done it is great isn't it.

Now you've done it you'll know what to expect next time and you can pace yourself better. I'm not sure its got physically any easier for me but mentally its not a problem, I just plod up at my own pace.
  • Once that first climb is out of the way its all good
I just need to be fresher the next time I go as last time was 3rd day in a row of riding and was just a slog, mind you still better than being at work
  • Was there yesterday test riding my new rig, floaty on the skyline decent

What's your new rig? It was Wednesday when I went in the end. I didn't get there till about 2 because there was a diversion on the road I would have taken. I'm trying to figure out when I can go next now :D . I might give Cwmcarn a go too, but that's quite a bit further up the road, so I'll have to make an earlier start!
  • Got a Mondraker Dune R its shiny and wicked fun trail tool.

Let us know if you make it to cwm, can ride steadily at the moment as have a slight back injury at the moment
  • Sounds like you're too quick for me even if your backs a bit bad! But I'll let you know when I'm gonna try Cwmcarn... coz I'll be after more advice :D
