Has anyone come across a good blog for building a mountain bike (hardtail) from scratch? I am led to believe its just like building a computer and trying to work out the tradeoff between building off the shelf or a custom build.

Cheers

Yes thanks although they all seemed to be about servicing - the closest being welding.

Do you mean building (ie. welding) a frame, or building a bike from scratch?

sorry I meant how to put one together. Like start with a frame and then how do you decide what forks to buy, headsets, angles....what components wont fit because of the stem you bought...etc etc
  • Basically just start from the ground up.

    Buy frame.
    Buy compatible forks.
    Buy compatible stem + bars.
    Buy compatible brakes.
    Buy compatible wheels.
    Buy compatible finishing kit.
Oh and dont forget tools somewhere throughout that lot lol!

Fairly simple, if you're not sure then post a question.... theres loads of people on here to help you out!

Worth going to a shop getting measured up on a bike you like or the frame you might want to buy. Measuring angles etc and your riding style or discipline as well. Then follow said steps shown above. Frame is always important and should ideally be your first choice in anything. Once you have frame looking at a set of forks is next. Anything else can come in any order you want really do you work top down or bottom up. Up to you. I personally prefer working from the bottom up so i go for wheels and drive chain followed by stem and handlebars to then sort out the gears and brakes. Saddle and seatpost are pretty much the last thing to ever go on any bike i fully dismantle to re build or maintain. Personal choice. Good luck and have fun :)
