Headsets, urgh, nightmare trying to learn it all with all the different names and variables.

Trying to work out what exactly is on the bike, its a Focus Vamp 2009 (dont bother googling, you wont find any decent info).

I emailed Wiggle as Focus themselves never answered and got this reply -
The focus Vamp is a standard 1 1/8" headset and it uses an Aheadset branded version but can be replaced with other brands such as FSA, Just make sure you get a standard headset not an internal headset.

Now when looking at the park tools website it does not look like a standard headset and it looks more like an internal headset going by the park tools website, I thought standard headsets had external cups which this one doesn't?

I can't seem to pull apart the headset either as the top lip encasing the bearings etc underneath doesnt want to let it all out.

The whole headset is 50mm wide externally, now looking at an old MBR mag with a headset guide, that indicates its also an internal headset.

The reason I want to find out is that this headset lets a hell of a lot of water inside which easily washes out the grease which drips all down the front of the frame etc after a wash, water gets into the frame and its a mess. Want to replace it with a better one, the headset on my stumpy doesnt let any water in and never get that problem!

Help!

have you looked in the FAQs?

looks like it has cups. therefore Zerostck/internal/semi integrated.

also how have you managed to measure it when it is still in the frame.

Oops headtube not headset, in reference to your "how you managed to measure it"

Yes I have read the FAQ, the 2 topics that apply to headsets and I'm still none the wiser.

It is according to my old MBR mag! Apr 09 issue. lol.

Their "how to guide" uses external measurements as well as internal to distinguise between the types.

I didn't think it would, however only going by the info I have.

if you want to look in side.

you need a bucket under the parts first. there is a big C clip holding the inner race in place.

all the balls are looseish in a fibre carrier. not worth playing with.
