I am considering upgrading to a smartphone. Are there any apps out there which you can upload you route and use it as a GPS system to follow your route. I know that there are apps which track your ride however what i am looking for is something i can use as a sat nav.

Also are there any mounts to which you can attach the smartphone to the handlebars or stem of the bike.

Thanks

Euros

There are plenty of apps- it depends on the OS but all the main ones (iOS, Android, whatever Nokia run now) are well covered. I use MotionX on an iPhone, and previously Sports Tracker on a Nokia running Symbian S60.

Check Amazon or eBay for handlebar mounts, there are plenty available at different prices. Note that phones run out of battery quickly and their GPS reception is fairly weak, compared to dedicated units.

  • On the rare times I need navigation, I just use Tomtom or similar, have it running in the background and speaking directions to me through some headphones.

    Try Viewranger.

It costs 4 quid but turns your smart phone into a fully functioning GPS to rival a garmin. You can even download OS maps (for extra cost).

My personal preference is Cardiotrainer. Good for planning training rides/runs. Its on Android.

I can also recommend http://ridewithgps.com/ for analysing ride data generated by most of these apps.

I've got "Cyclemeter GPS Cycling Computer" for my iPhone. tried it out today, works like a charm. Bags of functionality including Google Maps integration and various social networking options (if that's your thing), a steal for a one off £3.
