Just signed up to do this:
http://www.aspire.org.uk/channelswim/

Will need to do 148 lengths a week, so I aim to do about 50 lengths three times a week to begin with.

How much is a length? 25m?

I went swimming for the first time in aaaaages the other day.

Did 30 lengths, could have done more but I was really hungry! Anyway, I really ache afterwards, using a load of previously lazy muscle I guess.

i'm a really bad swimmer, not that i can't swim. it's just that after probably 10 lengths i'm absolutely knackered!!!! i've never seemed to get any better, even when i lived in tenerife and had a pool right outside my door and the sea a 5 min walk away and i was swimming everyday i still was poo at it :(

My Mum was a swimming teacher when I was younger and help run a club so I had no choice in swimming. I do like it though, I used to train 4-5 times a week doing from 100-200 lengths a session so once I get back in to it shouldn't be too bad, and I still do swim for my lifeguard training anyway.

hmmm, i'd personally try to get some lake swims in and get into a 50m pool at least once a week in the run up to your swim.
The amount of turns you'll be doing in a 20m pool is silly and will completely distort your perception of effort to swim a set distance. You'll be surprised how much more knackering 100m is when it's 2x50m instead of 5x20m.

DOH!, should really click the link before offering advice!

I did the Aspire swim last year
As I normally swim 3 miles a week anyway I knew that I'd do it easy, so my aim was to do it in 4 weeks which i did
Was really hard though as I kept miscounting so a friend/mum/lifeguard had to count every day.
Tips, are to eats lots of carbs, pace yourself, different strokes and to have rest days.
Couscous is my favourite pre swim meal as its light and filling.
Bananas after though as they give me cramp in the pool :?
    Good luck!!!
  • I need to lose a bit of weight then ill start swimming, be nice to get fit without putting stress on the old knees...there eighteen years old :/ could do with a rest

See, weird thing is I get cramp, but I've never once had cramp when I've been swimming, I think this is strange but I'm not complaining.

I thought you were actually going to swim the Channel and was impressed till I clicked the link realised it was in a nice warm swimming pool  That's a fair old distance to swim, but wouldn't you rather get fit by doing more MTB'ing?

i do a fiair bit of swimming myself. but i swim in a outdoor swimming pool as i hate swimming indoors, too many people, too hot, yu run out of breath too easily, too much chlorine. i dunno what's the furthest i have swam but it's like 300m in like an hour or two(can't remember) i reckon i could beat that now but my dad is too busy to be able for me to have enough time.

    good luck
  • went "swimming" for the 1st time in ages the other week...

Quite enjoyed it tbh... would like to find a pool down in Cardiff to take it up I think.

Which bit: the bit about not being impressed beacuse you're not smearing yourself in goose fat and swimming one of the busiest shipping lanes on the planet, or the bit about doing more MTB'ing? :D

For once, my last post wasn't meant as a pervy comment but as this is the Crudcatcher you can see why the ladies might take it the wrong way :)
