Weight Training

i havent posted this in the health, fitness and training forum cause this isnt mtb related.

i know there are a few muscle builders on here so i thought i ask for some training tips to see if any would be of any use. stuff like nutrition and whether you think the potions and powders (creatine and protein and the likes) are of an advantage to any of you.

im not using any supplements but all of my mates who weight train are constantly ramming some shake or another or a pill of some sort down their gullets.

do any work, are any really necessary or are they all placebos?

also, if any of you have split routines, what do you do. i train shoulders and biceps on the same days, then back, chest and triceps on the other days. i do both twice over a 7 day period.

i dont train legs as they are pretty big anyway and i still need to be able to run.

when do you train and when do you take on board food for the actual training and for the recovery?

i know this is all available of the web but you can pretty much pick any of the dvice and make it fit what you want so i thought id ask some real world type, i dont want to go to a weight training forum as those people are all gay.

I think it depends what you want to achieve, Sheeps. A lot of people I know who hit the gym do it to look the part, and to build muscle. I guess for these guys then protein shakes etc can make a big difference.

My brother was a weightlifter, and reached the European championships. He used to eat a load of chicken, and milk, but that was basically it.
However, he did not WANT to get "big" like a bodybuilder, he just wanted to be strong.
I remember him explaining that alternating days of training like a sheepscnut, and a resting day worked wonders. The protein was to help his body repair the damage that the heavy training had done, and it did this during the day (or two) of resting.

He was built like a brisk sh*thouse, and was crazily strong, breaking a few records along the way if I remember rightly. BUT, he did not look at all like a bodybuilder. Even though he could pretty much destroy any of them in a clean and jerk or powerlifting competition.

On a serious note, it will depend what you going for as the end result...I personally steer clear of things like creatine, because I don't want to become "ripped" and I'm not sure of the side effects. I do however use a protein shake, not sure if it's helping that much to be honest, but it does seem to make the muscles ache less and fills me up - stopping me eating my weight in shite food after a work out!

im deliberately trying to make my shoulders a bit broader and arms a bit bigger, the rest is for general strength and conditioning.

im not too fussed with getting ripped but i do want some mass on my arms and shoulders. im couplng this with trimming some weight down too.

I sometimes do a bit. I'm basically trying to achieve the impossible though, by increasing muscle tone and strength (to improve my joints) without gaining weight, and preferably losing weight (to put less weight and so stress on my joints). I'm yet to find a decent routine for this...

I wouldn't worry about the potions then. As long as you eat enough meat, you'll be fine.
My brother used to eat a load of chicken, but he was also training far harder than anyone who just hits the gym.
Any more than that, and you're probably overdoing it.

What exercises can I do to make my arms longer? I'd like to be able to get my arms all the way around that bird in Rhyl.

  • I always tuck into a tin of tuna after a big weights session at the gym.

Normally don't do anything though. A friend swore by protein shakes straight after.

I can see that out of the office window! (The castle, not the specific rack!)

What should I eat after a good stretching? to maintain my hulk-like physique?

  • Doesnt creatine make you grow man tits. You'll end up looking like an obvious from necessary.

Go down to the swimming baths and have a look at the guys (or even women) in the swimming teams. Then get yourself swimming.. You'll not find a more perfectly stereotypical athletic build.

Of course, if you want to get that bit bigger and look like a bit of a beef neck, then get yourself down to the gym. Chest, shoulders, back. Your arms will be working doing all of the above.

Not creatine, but certain 'roids. I can't remember which. A mate of mine had a mild case of 'b1tch nipple'. Took him years to get rid of it. He's like a shithouse now, mind.

Creatine does have some undesirable side effects though, stomach cramps, etc.

No, but you did explain the e-coli (I think) story, where the medic was your mate, and frequently bought you coffee before checking out Uranus.

i always use to call my sister, emma, roids as i thought it was a good name.

when i visited my old man a couple of yrs ago i notcd he a couple of new tattoos and one of them was sarah, for my sister sarah, the other was roids, for my sister emma.

i still chuckle when i think about his roids tattoo.

mind you, ive never seen anyone laugh as hard as he did when he saw my finger moustache tattoo!!

oh, and it was the doctor who would buy me a coffee then take me upstairs and finger me up the ar5e, the medic just had to hold my ar5e cheeks open.

Ah, I thought your mate WAS the doctor.

Me and my mate Will used to have a drink we'd invented called "tequileroids", or "oids" for short.
We used to get some funny looks, asking for more "oids".
