OK so everyone who knows me knows that pie is probably my favouritest of foodstuffs
I love PIE mmmmm, in fact I make sure that I eat it at least once a week. !
So............thought I should share my love of pie ................
Here are my thoughts..........oh and please join the group 'CAMPAIGN FOR REAL PIE' on Facebook
Pie is good, no actually, pie is not good, it is great. Savoury pies in particular, though I do like the odd bit of cherry pie. Anyway, the point of my wasting your time today is the debate about foods which pretend to be pie.
'FAKE PIES' They call themselves pie, but.....
1. Cottage/Shepheards Pie
The above 'Pie' has no pastry, so is this really a pie? I was always brought up to believe that a pie had pastry around filling.
1a. Fish Pie
Again, IT'S POTATO....NOT PASTRY
2. Open Pies
Is a 'pie' which is not entirely covered in pastry even a pie? What is the difference between an open pie and a tart? Personally I believe the tart is calling itself an 'open pie' rather than a tart becasue pies are obvioulsy considerably better than tarts.*
*Excluding bakewell tarts becasue they rock!!!...and they are not pretending to be pie!
3. Banoffee Pie
NOT PIE NOT PIE NOT PIE, I mean, its made out of biscuits!!!!!NOT PIE!!!... I think I have made my point!
3a. Key Lime Pie
As above...it is a tasty dessert....but it is NOT PIE!!!!!
So, although I am somewhat biased in my opinion (NOT PIE), are the above foods are mascquerading as pie?
The Cambridge dictionary defines pie as:
pie: noun [C or U]
a type of food made with meat, vegetables or fruit covered in pastry and baked.
Ha ha, so if this is the case, these are not pie as they are NOT COVERED IN PASTRY!!!!! FAKE PIES!!!!!!
However, this definition in itself raises yet another question. If a pie is something covered in pastry, what about the following baked goods; Should they be pie?
1. Sausage roll
A roll, not a pie, but it is covered in pastry and really tasty and thus, in my opinion, worthy of 'PIE' status. I do admit however, that it is not 100% covered in pastry as the ends are open, however, similarly a steak and ale pie (possibly, if not the most PIE-like of all pies) is often baked in a dish with pastry only on top. This is still a pie so the sausage roll cannot be discounted for this reason.
2. Pasty
Cooper has kindly advised me of the origins of a pasty (thanks Cooper) i.e originally one end was sweeet and one savoury, it was what miners took for their lunches apparently. Anyway, the definition of pasty:
pasty (FOOD)
noun [C]
a small container made of pastry with a savoury filling such as meat, vegetables or cheese
So, if it is covered in pastry, is it not a pie? If not, why not? Is it down to the size...if so, at what point does a pie become a pasty becasue I know for a fact that I have consumed a pasty that has been larger than one of the smaller pies that I have consumed....Answers on a postcard please folks!
Well herein ends my ranting. In conclusion may I say:
MAKE PIE, EAT PIE, LOVE PIE

There isn't a single point in that there post I don't agree with.
I think a pasty is differentiated from a pie by the container in which baked. Pies require structural support during baking, while pasties don't.0 -
I live in the pie capital of the UK!
other towns refer to us as the pie eaters.
the mascot for wigan is a big pie with arms and legs!
the local special is a wigan kebab - a pie in a barmcake (bread roll to everyone else)
but i might be the only wiganer who doesnt like pies. love a good (greggs) sausage roll.0 -
How can you not like pie :shock:Ride it like you stole it!0

Pizza pie - again, NOT A PIE.
However, seeing as the pastry is usually just a neccesity on a pie, I have no problem calling a fish pie, or shepperd's pie, a PIE. Pastry is a bit, well, cack. Replacing it with something else is a good call.
By the way, have you heard of my invention... the CAKE PIE?0 -
I never said Cottage 'Pie' wasn't tasty.....I just prefer to call it Cottage BAKE
Cake pie? Do explain...Ride it like you stole it!0 -
haha how many carbs?! Pastry, bread AND potato!!!
i'd only get one mouthful down and be full up :?
I can only eat half a portion of chip shop chips at the best of times! Never mind a pie, in bread!Ride it like you stole it!0 -

we have military pies which are puff pastry with mince and onion inside but they also have a rich vein of mushy peas running through the middle. ive never seen such deliciousness elswhere.
best pie is a balti pie from either morrisons or if i am at home, the britannia stadium.0 -

I LOVE PIES!
I regularly eat a couple of Morrison's pies after walking the hound. If you nip into Morrison's half an hour before closing, they are all reduced in price, which means more pie for your £... 4 pie pix 'n' mix for 99p!
Favourite Morrison's pie is the Meat and Potato, closely followed by the Snake & Pigmy ones. Thier Balti Pies are pretty awesome as well, but IMO, you need to get these warm, just after they've been baked rather than last thing in the day.
My all time favourite pie would be Mrs C's home made mince & onion pie.
*Banishes Mrs C to the kitchen to bake pie*
Pork pies also make an excellent 2nd breakfast after riding to work. Crust needs to be hard/crispy though - Ginster's Melton Mowbry would be my favourite here, closely followed by M&S snack ones.

Just to throw a curveball in though, what do you think of those pies (I can't remember what they're called) that have a pastry bottom half, but a layer of mash instead of a pastry lid?
Oh, and cake pie...
YES!
It's cake, of your choice, lovingly embraced by a layer of pastry, and possibly cream.0 -

I love Pie.
But most of you are talking about pre processed gack pie's.. fray bentos + morrisons and that muck.
Make a pie fresh, or get it from a real pie shop (and yes they do exist, one of the best i know is in Reading).
And one of my personal favourite pie's i have ever had was a xmas game Pie venison/Pheasent and a few others with cranberry's. Totally awesomeness0
