Idiotic/non thinking purchases

Yes, i've made an idiotic purchase.

Got a seatpost off here, and at the same time ordered a new seat clamp.
Seatpost = 27.2
Seatclamp = 28.6
Frame thickness = 1.6mm

Thats a hell of a light bike if thats the thickness.
So i'm guessing, as i have no vernier, that it should** be 30mm or 31.8mm

    make sure you dont get your diameters wrong when technicianing weapons. 30mm will not go into 7.62mm.

    erm, if the seatpost outer diameter is 27.2, and the thickness of the frame material is 1.6mm, then...

    Seapots clamp size = 27.2+ (1.6*2) = 30.4

    why x2? Makes sence that the frame is around 3mm tho.

    Sheepsteeth, i've been through that painstakingly annoying phase of my training... tolerances of 0.02mm, a sneeze and slip of the file could RUIN... i repeat RUIN, the work :( *note got 82% and highest on course :P

    just reiterating the annoyance :P

    You're talking about diameter not radius, the frame thickness is the same all around so essentially on both sides. Hard to explain without a diagram!!!!

    Oh thats where he got the magic number 2 from

    Anyways spotlight off my idiocy, anyone else done anything remarkably stupid?
  • If you looked at a cross section of seatpost in frame, from left to right you would see frame material, seatpost material, free space, seatpost material, frame material.

    Measuring the outside diamter of the frame measures the frame thickness twice.
    Make sense?

    Cheers mike, I was going to after my training. I've tried to get on the mtb club at cosford but both the people who run it have either left the RAF or moved base, and i've asked around but not enough people intrested to get it going again, most people on base want either football or rugby.
