decided to go with Shimano Gore Tex MW80 shoes. Local bike shop ordering them in for me. Looked around for ages. Sidi (too expensive). Pearl Izumi look the best but still pricey. Shimano versions get great reviews. Seem best all round for value / performance.
Ordered!

Did you look at the Northwave Celsius / Fahrenheit or Lake's winter mtb boots?

I've got the shimano ones too.

Your feet still get wet, there's a massive hole in the top!

Still warm and wet is better than cold and wet, and if you ride in mtb trousers you can keep the worst of it out, I don't though, shame.

I have Sidi Dominators. Bought them for under £100 in a sale last year, full price is eye watering. They're good, usual Sidi build quality, but as others have said, all these shoes have an achilles heal (haha) in that the opening where your foot goes into the shoe acts as a great drain for water off your legs to enter the shoe.

I have the MW80s - really good, I have used them through two winters without getting my feet wet. They are not as well insulated as some winter shoes so you will need a good pair of thermal socks for the really cold days.

northwaves for me, they are excellent. keeps the worst of it out. and when it does get wet inside it works like a wet suit so it stays nice and toasty even if a little damp

I also have Sidi Dominators - for Summer commuting. Not nearly warm/dry enough for Winter commuting in my book; Specialized Defrosters are the dog's proverbials in properly cold weather...

I have the Northwave "temperature scale", MTB version
I have had them now for two winters

winter one they were great, nice and warm, water proof and breathable
winter two getting a bit leaky towards the end of the winter. So I reproofed them in the summer. Much improved after reproofing but the improvement wore off after a few months.
winter three approaches and the boots are now clapped out and need replacing

These boots are good for one year and maybe two if you are lucky

Would I buy them again? Not for full retail, maybe if they were on offer

    overshoes? problem solved

Me too, though I had some of the neoprene ones and putting them on/taking them off twice a day killed them. I've now got the Altura race ones (not the NighVision) and they work well. Same shoes all year round now.

When it is really cold and wet, winter shoes PLUS overshoes is the way to go

That's quite a lot of extra faff when you're putting them on twice a day.

Dedicated Winter shoes shouldn't cost more in the long run, because your Summer ones will last longer, and it means you don't have to make so much of a compromise in choosing them.

Putting overshoes on isn't hard at all, you just roll them down half way to get the shoes on and off on a daily basis.
Overshoes = 24.99 RRP or so..

These winter shoes can go for over 100.

I know which route im going.

i dont get more than a month out of overshoes due to the way my cleats need to be set up for my knees. my feet are always rubbing the cranks.

and i always find that my feet are just as wet when using overshoes as when im not using them

Sidi gore-tex.... then you can save your nice shoes for the summer.

I plan on getting a pair to save my dragon2 for the dry days.
