Hi all,

seemed to have located and ironed out one problem (previous noise) only to gain another (nothings ever simple)

I recently removed the xt cassette, sram pc971 chain, and slx crank from my bike to de-grease and clean the drivetrain. Cleaned everything so sparkly clean and re-assembled onto my bike (exactly as the bits came off)

I now have some problems:

1) Jockey wheels seem far noiser than they were before (xt shadow mech) they don't look worn and i cleaned these as well - the chain just seems to attract and make much more noise than before when going round (the jockey wheels (pulley/tension) were put back correctly. Only thing i can think of is due to the cleanliness its made more noise?

2) When shifting on the back i encounter problems "mid-cluster" and cannot seem to get it working correctly. When shifting from smallest on the rear towards the wheel i can get it correctly, but on the way down it skips/slips or doesn't shift going on to the 4th smallest cog, or vice versa, can get it down towards the smallest cog ok, but going back it slips/skips/doesn't connect on the 4th cog.

I've tried a few tweaks with the barrel adjuster on the shifter, but cannot seem to get it to sit right.

I've printed out sheldons guide (to have a crack tonight) but wondered if there was anything really simple i may have missed - or is it a case of trial and error? - from what i can see the mech/hanger doesn't look bent

cheers all

You routed the chain properly through the tabs on the rear mech?

Make sure the jockey wheels ar in the right way round and spin freely.

it sound slike something must have not gone back right to be honest. or mabe you have cleaned the grease out of the jockey wheels and now they are running abit dry.

    however

with the trouble mid-cassette i find the best thing to do is to unbolt the cable and start a fresh indexing. you can spend hours chasing a couple of mischevious gears around where as resetting the indexing from scratch takes about 2 minutes.

also, make sure your cables are spotless inside and out.

the top jockey wheel seems a bit tight tbh, i did re-grease when i out them back in, the bottom one spins completely freely but not the top - it even feels a bit resistent when not in the mech.

i had planned to start the indexing again this evening - hoping that would clear the issue up. Will double check cables etc

How would i check for a bent mech hanger? I've looked visbily for this (wheel and chain off) and it looked ok to me - would the bike need to be dropped in at the shop to check?

i cant put up any pics until later (at work at the minute)

    cheers for all advice

not at all, everything worked very well, just a slight noise - which i eliminated prior to the clean up last night.
