Leaving Bike in the rain

Hello all,

I have recently acquired a new Giant Defy 2 machine.

Today is the second day i have brought it into work and just realised it is raining and my new bike is getting wet. :(

Unfortunatley i do not have anywhere at work to put it inside and my request for a bike shelter (there are 5 others that cycle in) will most likely take a year!

Of course i do not want any damage to occur to components so am thinking of a bike cover that i could leave at work, but will the rain actually do much damage in the long term if left out for 8 hours a day?

It will cause rusting of components eventually, just keep it clean and it'll stay rust free.

It will be cleaned every weekend, and during the week if need be when the weather is bad.

As long as nothing other than rusting will occur thats good as like you say as long as kept clean this should combat any rusting..

It will be OK so long as it's not a carbon bike, as eveyone know they dissolve in rain water.

Beware of flash rust (what a feeling...) on the chain.

    Keep it lubed.

Keep it clean and well-lubed, particularly the chain. You can get plastic bike covers - my local pound shop does them - if unduly worried
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

Wipe chain over regularly if wet eg WD40/GT85. Just wipe, no lube then relube if neccessary. Why not get a plastic sheet that you can cover the bike with and a couple of reusable zip ties.
