HI there,

I'm having a crisis-point before ordering the new bike.

The bike frame and forks will be white with no other colours.

The saddle will be black (learnt my lesson before with white)

The saddle post is black
The bars will be black
The hoods will be white

(all above is part of the build)

My question is should I get a black stem or a white stem?

The bar tape I have the option of.. I'm going to go for Black, only becasue again I've have white tape before and ages badly.

The tyres I've got the option of white walls or all black... I'm thinking all black or maybe with a red side wall, reason being there will be other small bits of red on the components and think the red would set if off a bit.

ON that basis, for bottle cages, should I play safe with Black, or be adventorous with white or maybe even red?

Sames goes with wheel skquerers?

Ta,

Dru.

    Black stem with black bars..

    White tape with white hoods.

Red sidewalls will make a nice bit of colour to the bike.

Bottle cages to match the bike (white with red), which should in some way match the bottles.

Wheel skewers to contrast the frame and forks, therefore red! (As long as the hubs are red too :P)

    Easy Peasy!

White Fizik Microtex bar tape doesn't age and wipes clean easily. I've had some on my winter bike since last Sept and it still looks fresh!

It would help if we had a pic of the frame...

You can't keep a saddle white yet you think white hoods are a good idea? Odd.
I've managed to keep my white Toupe gel in pretty decent nick over the last 3 years. It's taken a hammering mind as it was on my winter bike too.
White tyres are a non-starter in my experience. I bought some Vredestein Fortezza Tricomps in white when I bought my Izoard and they look stunning for about an hour.

They look even worse against a brilliant white frame after you've put only a handful of miles on them. They were already starting to look gash when I took that.

Never had a problem with white cages, even on an MTB. Outside face cleans up good. Inside face can get scratched and scuffed but it's usually holding a bottle anyway.

As per Nap', some white tapes are do-able all year round given some attention. Baby wipes.

I went the all white look . Bad idea.

Bought the Continental GP4000 in white, fizik bar tape, white hudz and white Arione all in white. Keeping it clean is a nightmare.

Traded in all the white and went all black. Looks great against my white frame and fork.

I've got a white frame with black stem, bars, hoods and tape which looks good and wears well. I also have red tyres, which provide a nice splash of colour.

    Cheers folks,

The bike in question will be the Planet X SL with Sram Red (or part Red build)

So effectively a complete white frame and forks with silver lettering (new style frame)

There is tiny red detail in the Red Sram levers

The hoods will be white (no other colour options on the build)

Regarding Fizik White tape - good to know - but not available as part of the new build

I don't particulalry like the styling of the planet x stem so might swap that out with a concept one I have (Black with a little white and red trim.

Seat post, just wondering if I should grab a carbon one or stick with alloy..

Carbon seatpost can be lighter and cut out some road vibration.

White hoods are a b'stard to keep clean. AutoGlym tar remover was the only thing I found that cleaned the white Hudz I had.

On my white Planet X SL Ultegra Build I have:

Black saddle, stem, bars, tyres/wheels/hubs/spokes, hoods, bottle cages (PX carbon ones) and saddle bag.

White tape, comupter, and Skully LED light now the evenings are starting to draw in.

In my opinion, a white stem would look awful with black bars, and white tyres would look odd with black wheels (presumably PX Model Bs) and would age badly (don't they go yellow).

The white computer clashes a bit with the stem, but I'm not that fussed.

    Cheers,

I was wondering if as the frame was all white, whether or not stem and seat post should be built to match... but the concensus is not. :)

I could be tempted to add a white saddle - but not until the old one is knackered obviously.

Google them. I got mine from Wiggle.

Conti GPs in white will look like conti GPs in cream after 1 week, then Conti GPs in dirty beige after a month. Bad idea!

My R.1 in white were more grey!

I have had Contis, Vittorias and Schwalbe in white and regretted everyone of them!

    Maybe a re-think is required.
  • You've got to go black. You buy a white frame to be classy, but going over the top with white components makes it go from classy to tacky. Buy good quality black components. Good advice is Ritchey's WCS stem in the wet look black, so it's shiny!

I thought my vittoria rubino pros in white lasted pretty well colourwise.
That said I have bought black ultremos for the new bike as I have decided coloured tyres is a bit try hard.
Totally down with colour matching tape, hoods etc though.
Not climber, not sprinter, not rouleur

Yeah, wet look black would look good as would natural sidewall tyres...

White frame with black components, bar tape and full black tyres (Schwalbe Ultremos). Even your wheels should be full black ie black rims, spokes and hubs.

    End of :)

I'm thinking about finishing or accenting the bike with a bit of red.

With some basic photoshopping (read mspaint)
I've managed to do an artistic impression of the bike I'm getting (colour wise ie frame, saddle, hoods, bar tape, tyres)

    PXSLWHITE50.jpg

I'm thinking about getting the Planet X Ti and Carbon Q/R's in red (just 45gm the pair for £20)
Also looking at getting a set of the Red Sram jockey wheels as well. Think they will go?

In the 80's Ford brought out an all white, colour - coordinated Escort XR3I . It appealed to Essex boy racers - but nobody else.
Is this really the look you are after?

Ermmm. I'm not after an all white bike (hence the picture above showing what its going to be like)

The only part of the bike that will be white is the fork and frames - and thats how it comes from Planet X

I like the white stem on the photos of the Colnago C59 and I think Ritchey do a 'wet white'. Re those white GP4000, there is a review on the Velodramatic site from last year I think.
