have been looking at riding shoes recently and saw the fox range and also two of my mates ride in them. they are in teh casual footware section though.
i'm most concered about grip on flat pedals, price and duarability and comfort.
also have taken into consideration the shimano dx spd or 661 filter spd shoes as i might get some spd pedals as well as ride in flats . the 661 filter say they can be used on flats and spd and i'm sure there was a non spd shimano dx version?

The Shimano AM40 is the non spd version. An excellent shoe that imo is better than 5 10.0

for the fox shoes i have decided it would be out of these:
the addition http://www.stif.co.uk/gear/select_options.asp?productid=8412&store=mtb the sole looks abit like the one on 5:10 shoes
qadrant http://www.stif.co.uk/gear/select_options.asp?productid=8415&store=mtb
and fox default http://www.stif.co.uk/gear/select_options.asp?productid=7903&store=mtb0 -
Don't need to spend that much!!
I got some Etnies skate shoes that have done me proud for £20.
They have a very stiff yet grippy sole and also have a load of support ofr the base of your foot to stop it moving about in the shoe.
Terrible to walk in though
something like these DC's would be good... velcro to keep the laces tidy, stiff skate sole and grippy enough for flats.

iv got the 661 filter shoes and have used them once or twice on flat pedals. im not a flat pedal rider but they served me well and they look pretty good.
iv always like the fox addition shoes to be honest. i might get some just for casual.0 -
If your looking for a shoe that will do well on flats and is clipless compatible, you probably can't beat the new 5.10 Minnaar shoe, really expensive though
I know someone that happily uses their shimano dx's on flats though and they get on absolutely fine grip wise0 -
As this topic is discussed SO often I can't be bothered for a long answer.
To sum up name a single pro, on flats, that does not ride 5.10.
There is a reason for this, the 5.10 rubber is special. Not the shoes, they are crap, just the rubber. no-one else you are considering has this rubber.
You can get the 5.10 rubber put on any shoes, feetfirst do it for a reasonable price.
It is worth the money. Why would I care about 150g of bike weight, I just ate 400g of cookies while reading this?0
