Nokia Ovi Maps for Navigation
Peddle Up!

I'm playing about with using Ovi maps on my Nokia Smartphone for navigation. Nice though the Garmin etc., are, I've already got the Nokia and a couple of spare batteries (eBay - UK accredited supplier!) and if it rains there's always the plastic bag!
The walk guidance option seems to work reasonably on the routes I've tested as it sends you along the B roads, and away from the busy trunk routes. It seems to go for as direct a route as possible, and best of all you can calculate or set up your route on the Ovi web site and download it to the phone. It could do with being a bit more user friendly though on route modifications, and the arbitrary 50km limit on the route is also a bit of a pain.
Does anyone have any hints and tips on getting the best out of this setup?
Thanks.

I used to do this sort of thing (following pre-planned routes, and recording rides) with Sports Tracker, when I had a Nokia. It worked pretty well, but they've stopped support for it now, and have handed it all over to somebody else.
I was alerted of this the other day when I got an email out of the blue, containing the worst piece of toady managerial doublespeak I've ever read: who allowed this to go out to customers?!
"Why is Nokia ramping down Nokia Sports Tracker beta? Nokia Sports Tracker beta was an experimental, specialized vertical service letting people collect, and share their physical activities and routes using their mobile devices. Nokia's strategy moving forward is to continue to deliver on the potential of this space, but through broader horizontal offerings that take advantage of our growing Ovi platform of services."
Sorry if all this isn't much help, but you might find that the new incarnation of Sports Tracker is still good.0 -
Thanks. That looks like an interesting bit of software, similar to the Polar system.Purveyor of "up"0

Sports Tracker has now come out of beta and is now working as a fully fledged app (now supported by a 3rd party) http://www.sports-tracker.com/#/us-EN
I use it to track my routes etc., but haven't yet used it to plan/import routes although I understand it has this capability (KML files IIRC).Cycling weakly0 -
Is this link of any use?

I had a look on the new web site but I couldn't locate any instructions. The older PDF manuals floating around the Internet don't refer to the ability to upload routes, which is a pityPurveyor of "up"0 -

Now I've a good play with this I can report that it's an impressive piece of smartphone software. The inclusion of other acvtivities is a bonus and I'm looking forward to starting a collection of my regular ride performance figures.
Shame about the lack of uploadable routes, though.Purveyor of "up"0 -
