V-brakes for my commuter

I wasn’t sure if this should go here or in the commuting forum, so apologies if I got it wrong…

I had a crash while commuting this morning, and while I won’t be able to look the bike over properly until I get home, the front v-brake caliper took a hit and looks like it might need replacing. The bike is a low-end, rigid 26” MTB from Giant and is currently fitted with OE calipers from Promax.

If I do have to replace the caliper, what would you guys recommend? I only use this bike for commuting (all conditions) and bike path riding, never off road. I’m a fairly heavy rider, though at 93Kg (14.5 stone). I’ve never had a problem with the current unit’s performance, and I’m sure a cheap set of Tektros or similar would be fine, but I’d like to get something with stainless steel hardware if possible. That said, this is my lock-it-up-on-the-street bike, so I don’t want to get too expensive/exotic…

Would it be worth getting ‘performance’ calipers if I’m keeping the same levers? The ones I have are built into my Shimano Altus shifters (EZ-Fire EF-50). Finally, if I do end up having to change the front caliper, would it be advisable to change the rear also?

Cheers,
Adam.

You could get a set of Deore v-brakes cheap of ebay or halfords v-brake kit is good at around £25 and includes levers and brakes.
  • I know i shouldn't plug a sale in this section of the forum. But i have a front Tektro V brake you can have. Pads on it are 8 month old but still loads of meat left.

    Yours for £10
