Where to live...

OK so i'm moving to Cardiff and have been weighing up my options of where I can afford/want to live.

I've seen a fair few flats over the past few days, i'm going to rent for 6months(ish) while I settle down in the new job and get to know my way around.

Now there seems to be 3 options.

1) Fully refurbed + furnished, modern studio/1 bed flat. Small, would basically just be a place to crash.

2) Not really refurbed + furnished, fairly old and generally tatty looking 1 bed flat. More space and a bigger kitchen/lounge.

3) New, unfurnished, more expensive, further away from work, but in a quieter are out of town.

Hmm... I'm thinking option 1 atm... as long as I can get my bike + tv in the place, I think i'd be happy?

Budget of around £450pcm max... Not wanting to splurge all my wages on a flat, GF is currently searching for a job so when she get one, the max rent will got up to £900(ish)pcm.

Northish Cardiff (Cathays, Roath, Whitchurch, Heath) are favourable... nearly put a deposit down on a flat in Barry but I decided it was just too far to commute :(

Needs to be big enough for me to live, but obviously enough room to keep the Mrs entertained

have you taken into account your bike.

    1. i lived in a new build flat (white walls and beige carpet) the bike was just all wrong for it. lived on 4th floor, had to carry bike the whole way (tyre marks on walls)
    2. carpets arent good for fettling on as any oil shows up.
and had to fettle in flat as no outside space, so ended up in small bathroom so i could clean the floor.
    3. therefore couldnt wash bike either, which in boggy northwest is after evey ride.

(p.s. you cannot wash a bike in a bath. it no fit. i tried, made a mess)

for £900 pcm you could easily get a more or less proper house. the prvious house we had before was about £500 pcm and it was a terreced(but with like 3 more houses) 2 bedroom house with a decent garden space, big kitchen fair sized living room and bath room

Its the 1st thing I think about when I enter a flat

Trying to get a ground floor flat if I can haha!

Only going to have the P7 though, the Saracen will be split and everything worth anything will be sold!

TBH, it's probably the wrong side of Cardiff for you...

you're slap bang in studentville in those areas mate, just make sure you check that out first, especially in cathays. it might seem quiet right now cos all the students are on summer holiday but it gets pretty rowdy at night with them coming back from the pub etc.

the heath is a good bet, plenty of student nurses for sheeps to have a go on  whitchurch is also nice, whitchurch village is quite cool. i do like roath aswell. but just bear in mind that driving up caerphilly road and over caerphilly mountain can be raelly busy at rush hours.

  • Aye.. i know which areas are worst for students so i'm trying to look in quieter areas :)

Done the commute for my interview on a monday and it wasnt too bad... just the roundabout coming off the M4....which is actually worse coming home lol! Plus the job is flexi so I can time my commute accordingy!
