Saloon (got a boot) version?

I want to get the bike out and about and it won't readily fit in the car without basically taking both wheels off... which is a faff too far.

So I'd like a bike rack... anyone got any recommendations?

    The H place?

I've had a universal one for a good few years that was reasonably priced, did the job and fitted on my Passat saloon, and pretty much everyones car that i've lent it to.

Its no more faff to take out 2 quick release wheels than it is to fit a bike rack each time you want to go out.

Then you have to store bike rack when not in use.

Good point - well made... shut up

(It's more having the room to put stuff in the car as well)

and there is plenty of space in the garage for the rack

Get a roof rack mate, far better and you can still access the boot for all your other gear.

Far better for the local petrol stations. A roof rack would destroy the fuel consumption

My roof rack, on permanently reduced my MPG by 3. So I wouldn't worry too much about a rack.

if you were getting 45 mph, thats a reduction of 1/15th or nearly 7%

  • Actually, for saloon cars I think the hit you would take on your fuel consumption would be just as bad with a boot-type carrier. Boot carriers are good mpg-wise for estates and hatchbacks

I've got a saris bones 3 on mine. not cheap, but it's a great bit of kit. no time to put on, works with pretty much any car (i've had it on a seat altea, a mini cooper and an mx5 with no trouble) and super stable. clamps are built in, so no bungee cords needed. would recommend it.

i think you made a mistake kieran, it's golf clubs you need, not a bike rack.

I had roof racks & bike carriers on a 2001 VW Golf V6 and saw a minimal drop in consumption and much preferred roof mounted to boot mounted in terms of luggage capacity and access to the boot. Not to mention scratches to bodywork etc,

I'm now looking to get roof rack & carriers for my 2006 Audi A4 Avant ... although Audi want £145 for the roof bars alone!

I get 53, but it is a worthwhile compromise compared to wrecking the paint taking the rack off every Monday.

    Try this:

    Also this:

(I have three fitted. Four would be problematic)

I remove my entire rack, it takes about 2 minutes to remove, otherwise it's noisy and horrible for fuel consumption. (Incidentally I remember trying to race a Range Rover with three bikes on my roof. Not smart.....)

    Avoid Halfrauds.
