Just round the corner from where I live!!

Yes I know that road well and have avoided it like the plague ever since I moved to Welling two years ago. If you cycle the way you're supposed to you become the butt of overly aggressive drivers and if you stick to the cycle lane - well it's dangerous.

So I think I used it for about a couple of months before discovering that the London cycle network route runs one street back, and parallel. Nice calm streets, no cycle lanes and much much safer to use. I know that the LCN leaves a lot to be desired, but in this case, they've got it bang on!!

    So now you know 8)
  • Just noticed that this thread got ressurected =)

Since August when the incidenct happened, I have used the same route and as a consequence the same cycle path 4 days out of 7 and so far (gripping some wood really tight) no repeat of the incident.

Now I also use the cycle lane and the broken white lines as a "guide" and instead of sticking religiously to the path, I ride far more assertively on this part of the route.

Basically I take a line 3ft outside of any potential objects such as cars and peds, and stick to that line even if it inconvieniences the drivers behind. A lot of the time this means being in the cycle lane, but on the patch where my accident happened (and other dangerous parts), it means that I dont swerve left and then right to follow the cycle path, so cars have no chance to attempt a stupid passing maneuver....

I wont ever say that a crash will improve your road skills, but it certainly helps put you in a more assertive frame of mind that MAY save your arse (or get you killed... Yet to be tested to this extent!!)

  • drivers fault if the cycle path your riding along had a give way sign just before the junction would be different but from the google link you posted looks like you were just riding along and as usual some car driver doing the SMIDSY thing
Pain hurts much less if its topped off with beating your mates to top of a climb.
