52 and unrepentant. I weigh under 11 stone so think the younger and bigger can mock themselves first,. I ain't getting off my bike just yet, cliche or not.
  • Not too keen on the label, MAMIL or otherwise. But I suppose acronyms are inevitable.

I'm just a bloke - well over 'middle-aged' whatever that might be

I wear Lycra - I have been referred to as 'a legend in his own Lycra'. I think that was a reference to the rather revealing nature of close fit

I ride a bike that cost as much as I wanted to pay. More than some, by far, and less than others

I still enjoy seeing others embracing the joys of cycling, for whatever their reasons and if that is MAMIL (or MAWIL) good on them.

yeah Wimbledon is the same. our municipal tennis courts are deserted for all but a month during and just after W/don. for that fleeting moment, the brand new whiter than whites on show dazzle passing traffic and cause problems for low flying aircaraft.

    its soon over though.

More people getting expensive news bikes = more people quitting and selling them for half price on Fleabay! YAY!

    Middle Aged Dag In Lycra
  • Sexist article.
Middle aged (even more so since Saturday last). Tick.
Bought flash road bike (OK, entry level but it is flash in my head). Tick.
    Just discovered sportives. Tick.
Lust after kit (but won't until my tummy disappears a bit more). Tick.
Huffing & puffing up 2% inclines. Tick.

    MAWIL and proud.

Thanks for the tip about looking on Flea for previously loved bikes if it all wears off - will let hubby know about that one. I think he should treat himself.
  • I'm an OGLUB. Old Git, Lycra Under Baggies.

Wearing them underneath is to avoid appearing more athletic than I wheezily am.

+2 for that. I even have WC rainbow stripes on my sleeves.... :D

Oops - that's probably upset someone...

Of course, I'm the exception in that I'm definitely middle-aged (50) but I happen to look FABULOUS in lycra. So really, I'm doing everyone a favour by setting them such a splendid example.

 I've got British champ stripes on my jersey sleeves (jersey made up for the 2008 Etape, subtle nod to our "Britishness"). Young fella on the club run on Saturday asked me if I was an ex-champ because of them - I'm fairly sure (but not 100% sure) he was taking the p*ss...

Brilliant, that's my favourite so far

I realise the article is a bit tongue in cheek but going out and buying a Porsche is purely a financial outlay.

I think most middle aged people who have got into cycling (myself included) have been because they have always done other sports and now their body is knackered. Cycling gives a low impact way of continuing to compete, even if it is in a Sportive against yourself.

    Carbon bike 1K - porsche 40K isn't really a comparison

At 56, am I too old to be a mamil - maybe a OGIL (old git ....)?

I've got the carbon bike but suspect mamils should easily beat my 7K miles/year.

I do enjoy shopping at Waitrose of course but also by cycling gear in the Aldi specials.
  • This bloke ain't too shabby for a MAMIL...

Come on now, Outofbreath, you do yourself no justice.I bet it's a fetching image. Really.

    Wear it and be proud!

(Anyway, what IS middle aged? I don't understand.)

Perhaps we should start a thread to compete with the 'Girls in Lycra shorts' thread? MAMIL/MAWIL self portraits anyone?

In the spirit of way more self-revelation than is necessary, I give you

I am, of course, going to lose all that flab just as soon as I get a really nice new bike...
  • I don't understand it either - I'm 24 or thereabouts in my head.

Bless you for saying it :D but I suspect your mind's eye to be a bit defective (age related maybe).

It's just a bit annoying when you think you're doing something good for yourself to find that you're a stereotype, apart from the man bit obviously. I shall carry on however.

Those shorts in that 'other' thread - blimey - I could probably make a pair into an arm warmer for me

ETA - Good on ya Bompington!!! 8)
