Why not do both? The Brecon Beast is the easiest because it does have a fair bit of road work involved as it links the various mountains together around Brecon, and then the run back into Brecon at the finish also involves a couple of miles of road work. Obviously the climbs are longer, but I find that they are the sort that you can get into a rythem and spin the legs. On a day like last year the scenery is superb :D

The Afan Monster is in its first year so no one knows the route apart from the organisers I guess, but they do say its almost all off road (Of course there will be lots of fire roads). Around Afan the hills are shorter but steeper, so there's bound to be more up and downs to wear you out :? The time estimated to finish the course seems to be 2-3 hours longer than the Beast so this is going to be the toughest.

I'm doing both and just using the Beast as a nice day out and a training session for the monster. Which ever you choose, take plenty to eat along the way and enjoy
  • Both are you mad

I am not sure I am ready for that. I think I will do the beast and see how I feel.

    cheers for the advice.

im hoping to do the afan enduro - i have enterd but not sure if i will be healed in time after a surgery i had on my arm a few weeks back
i did the Brecon beast last year and found it really boring-way too much road sections for my liking-think it took me about 3 hrs 40.
i think the Afan is a lot more epic and im expecting it to take me around 5 hours, but i think it will be a much more technically challenging 75 km that the brecon 65 km

hope to see you there Keith if im able to ride
Dont look at it-ride it! they are tools not f*cking ornaments

I'm doing the 75km Afan Monster with my son and a mate. Longest ride so far is 33 miles taking in a lot of single track on the North downs Leith/Holmbury/pitch and with 4 proper weeks training left with a 2 week taper i just hope ive done enough :)
We've been riding 3 times a week but i have not done as many long rides as i would have liked. I'm just hoping to get to 60k in good enough shape to tough the last 15k.
Ive just read about a couple of guys who took 6 hrs 15 on a section of the Trans wales that was 48km .....
So im looking at 8 hrs i reckon to be safe. I'll be taking it easy and trying to get us round as a group (well thats the plan). I think we clocked the w2 trail at 45km in 4.5 hrs with stops.
Am under no illusion how hard this is going to be you just cannot get that sort of climbing in down here on the North downs. Guess we should have done a few rides on the south downs but thats just not as much fun :)
really looking forward to riding all that luverly single track :)

I'm doing both. Can't see the beast being too difficult to be honest... the Afan monster, who knows :)

If the Brecon Beast is the 'Brechfa Beast' then it's been cancelled apparently?

    Nopes, different thing.
  • Brecon beast and Brechfa Beast are Seperate events.
I have decided to do the 100km option of the Brecon Beast, if anyone has any route info would be greatly appreciated.

Might do the Afan event but will see how I feel

hey Kev sorry for late reply- i aint been on here in ages.
been doing a lot of self physio, did my 1st road ride today, arm felt weird as hell and really not good over the bumps. i just orderd a new wrist support which should help me. i know what i need to work on now-gotta strngthen my grip, increase movement in fingers and wrist and try to strengthen wrist a hell of a lot more before i go offroad.
i think i will just about be able to do the enduro in a few weeks but have to ride a lot slower on the descents than i normally would
hows your training for the enduro going-im assuming your doing the shoerter one too?

nah mate, i'm not doing it. silversladey is a mate of mine and we went for a ride last week and he killed me!!! we did about 30 km and i was absolutely fooked. confirmed that i'm way too unfit to be taking on either the beast or the monster.

we did find an awsome downhill track that you may know of though. it was up above abercarn on the opposite valley a bit further along from cwmcarn, nice and steep with a huge 12-15ft drop half way down (which i didn't do  ) if i'd been padded up i would've tackled it a bit quicker but i was in xc mode and was on the brakes all the way down
