Whats lights are for you?!

  • Reckon there's such a thing as too bright. Like when car drivers stay on full beam.
  • I have for years had lupine edison 4 on front of my MTB - really to bright for road use and too short run time. Just bought exposure joystick for the front of my new road bike (Roubaix elite). Its more than needed to be seen but is fantastic for dark country roads. The run time on medium is great and you really dont need the high beam. Also a good options as I have if with the helmet mount so will double up as helmet light for MTB rides. Very small and neat but I would by the zip lock mount as much neater.

I await the delivery of my new RADBOT 1000 rear light. Having read the reviews I think it looks like the new replacement of the previously best Planet Bike superflash.

my rear light was a cheap £3 jobby from Wiggle, 5 LED and have to be honest it out performs my more expensive branded light cant fault it...was bought as a supplementry light but now its the main one!

Up front use a Hope Vision One....cant fault it gives a good spread of light and is more than adequate for the road...in fact I use it on my MTB as well along an old railway line route we do that is totally unlit and pitch black of an evening and performs just fine.
Some may see the fact that it takes 4 AA batteries as a downside as oposed to rechargeable light...but for me this is a positive I have 2 sets of AA rechargeables so if it goes flat whilst out quick batt swap not left in the dark.

+2 for two at the back, I've just bought one of these , It's VERY bright on spot and flash modes. Time will tell how it works in the real world

Strada for me too. I use the Exposure Red Eye at the back. Plugs into the Strada & is mega bright. Quality kit but not cheap. Strada + Red Eye is about £250.

I commute down unlit lanes in the winter & these things are never wanting.

I think it's a sign of the times, we no longer have to put up with poor lights, we can now have very bright lights and the prices and the size of the lights are coming down. You no longer have to spend a weeks wages on a decent set of lights, so, no excuses. When the car driver refuses to dip his/her lights flick onto full power and fry the B*****DS

Thinking back to the old lights with 2 dirty great U2 batteries that weighed as much as a modern bike , They looked bright if you stared straight into them but in reality they hardly lit up the front wheel, then the batteries leaked............ Ee we don't know we're born these days

  • Hope vision one. Bought a set of 2700mAh batteries and charger to go with it and a spare battery holder. I think I will buy a second one for the depths of winter.

On the back I have 3 blackburn leds. 2 on my bag flashing and one on the seatpost on fixed.
I could do with a brighter rear light tbh.

Did you get this from Hope - I recall someone on here saying they got one from somewhere like Maplin (much cheaper) but I can't find one anywhere?

I found the Hope a great improvement over my Cateye 320, I run both up front with a single 600 at the back, but will add another this winter. Use these as backups

2 x Hope 1's here. Like the Smart rears but they fail when wet.....

Rear choice is Blackburn Mars 4.0 and or Mars 3.0 and a RSP Astrum - 2 x 0.5w LED's - 1 diffused, one spot - very good and can be got for £15 if you look around.

Not if you smear petroleum jelly or some-such around the gasket between the front and back of the light.

I bought my half watt rears with Polaris fronts last year for about £12 the pair. I daresay other similar offers will be along soon. In the meantime, I shal be looking for a good deal on a couple of the 1 watt rears. Bonkers value for money even at full price!

Is a P7 at a reechable budget for a poor student like me?

I want another LD20 on the front or a P7, then I can turn it so I can look at the scenery in the dark.

    I use this set

    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/Cateye_HL-EL600_Single_Shot_and_TL-LD610_Light_Set/5360045560/?referid=frogoog&source=googleps

I also carry a spare AA battery for the rear light and the following as a spare for the front as it uses the same mount

    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/Cateye_HL-EL135_LED_Black_Front_Light/5360025763/

Overall I am very pleased with them and would recommend them.

    Cheers

Lumicycle LED 3 tied in (if necessary) with the Lumicycle HID light. I can set the LED to flash and the HID provides steady and bright illumination. ypartner uses a Schmidt hub with an upgraded Solidlight and that's good. I don't really care if they are TOO bright but I try not to dazzle motorists. However we want everyone to know we are there. 2 x Smart lights on the back, one steady and one flashing

Lumicycle lights for me too. Expensive but worth it. I've had my set for 5 years now, and apart from changing a bulb and a new battery are still going strong.

Great thing is they're a UK manufacturer and their service is excellent.
