So a strong line up of sprinters but GC contenders? Not so much.

Two former GT winners, numerous top tens in GTs this year and previous, and potential Tour and Giro winners. Oh and I forgot to mention both Schlecks are riding. Pretty strong I would say. Just because the strongest stage racer isn't racing and Basso isn't racing due to having ridden two GTs and Evans from injury, doesn't mean it is not strong.

In fairness to Andy FF leaving out the Schlecks makes quite a difference!

Interesting to see how many are going to be riding all three GT's this year.

Will the Schlecks actually add anything to the race? Last year they both started and abandoned before the race hit a mountain.

Andy Schleck said he would be aiming to help Frank get the win after he crashed out of the tour, so they might do something this year.

Hi, hope you don't mind a question, I've only started following the tours this year,

'Andy Schleck said he would be aiming to help Frank get the win after he crashed out of the tour, so they might do something this year.'

In the TDF, Frank was supporting Andy, are both brothers similar in ability and equally able to win yellow ?

Andy is a better than Frank although Frank is also a top GC rider. See last year's tour

I think it's a great line up with the Schlecks too, better than expected and even though I always enjoy the Vuelta, I'm looking forward to it this year with a bit more gusto. The route is a b*stard too :D

A good route but as ever, the riders make the race. I fear a lot of siesta time though.

Whilst some good sprinters will be there, others will only be racing as a tune up for the Worlds and there aren't that many big GC contenders.
  • Tom Danielson ?

    I thought he has retired.

His time will come, he is still quite young and getting used to the Euro scene.

He hasn't retired, instead we've just seen the end of the hype associated with him.

That said he was sixth or thereabouts on GC last year when a bout of the runs saw him ejected from the race. An outsider for the race.

He's only 32, so has plenty of time left to come good.

This is a genuine question. When did you last watch a Tour where you thought the racing was good as I thought this Tour was excellent and the best for a long time. I don't understand why you would still be watching it if you have not seen a good one for years?
  • No Ricco or Rasmussen. They have missed the August 8th deadline, even though the Cobra is reportedly now a Quick Stepper.

Can't say the scenery is a big draw to cycling for me.

If the Schlecks turn up to win it then I can see them demolishing everybody in that line up, probably only Menchov and Nibali will be close. I can see Sastre saving himself for a couple of big stage win attempts.

I can't see many of the sprinters finishing the race as it's so hilly and they won't want to kill themselves before the worlds. Even the opening week is not very sprinter friendly! If they go for it Hushovd + Friere must be favourites for the points jersey?

Hopefully we'll get some good racing. The course certainly give plenty of opportunities for attacking riding, lets hope the riders have something left in the tanks!

True - hilarious the Danielson fanboys still think he's the next Armstrong.

Still if you add the Sclecks - great line up.

I do like the Vuelta - lots of cheeky mountain top finishes and little digs up to medieval towns - when you don't expect them. A bit like the Giro.

Normally everyone is raced out, except some knarled Spanish pros (and Menchov) and just riding into form for the worlds.

A competitive Vuelta, with the Schlecks really going for it, would be superb.
