Hey everyone, this is my first post so please don't flame me!
I have a newish Gary Fisher Wahoo Disc and I want to replace the grips on it. I don't know whether the grips are lock on or normal. How do I find out how to put on lock on grips?
Cheers

if they are lock on there will be an allen bolt or some other locking device."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

If they are lock on they will have a metal ring at one end with an allen key bolt keeping them attached to the bars.
Its a simple case of sliding them on and tightening the bolt. Ususally a 2mm allen key.
If they are friction grips, squirt a bit of lube between the rubber and work them off.0 -

Ok thanks a lot guys, i figured they are friction grips. Can i put on lock on grips if i take them off?

Which grips are better

Yes they will fit any standard handle bar.
Grips are personal really. Look for reviews and see if you can find anything that fits your preference.0 -

i'd recommend lock-on grips over standard, so out of the two you've listed, i'd go for the GT ones in the second link.
There'll do the trick, but you'll need gloves as well if you're doing any sort of "proper" riding0 -

Soapy water usually does the trick. Don't use anything oily or greasy.
Superstar grips are quite popular. I can also recommend Cane Creek, but some people consider them a bit pricey. My abundant supply of MTFU is reserved for use in dry, sunny conditions.0 -
Thanks for all the tips guys.
Is the fitting of the grips universal? How will I know that they will fit my bar?0 -
All mountain bike grips fit a standard 7/8" bar grip area. There will be no problems regarding fitting as long as you do not have grip shift.0

I squirt a bit of 3in1 using the straw then Muck Off to get ride of the grease. Works fine for me.
But yeah, soap will work fine too.0 -
I run the Race Face Strafe grips, some people think they are expensive, but I find them brilliant.
I have a small write up on our Facebook page if it helps at all?

Just be warned, if you do this, don't expect them to ever grip again if you're thinking of re-using them on another bike, which I often do.
An old trick I learned from my BMX days, when you had to remove the girps to get the brake levers off, was to squirt in a little hairspray. Twist them a bit then they slide straight off. Then when you come to put them back on again they grip like a vice. I have seen this strip the paint on my home re-sprays though. But it's under the grips, so what the hell.0 -
Cheers for the replies everyone. I have decided to get the Gt grips from amazon as i have £15 worth of vouchers from a relative.
