The first 'anotomic' bars certainly had the flat lower section you described - more recently I think it's extended to Compact bars which have shorter drop and reach. I agree that anything with a constant-radius bend and straight ends is more reminiscent of a classic bar - it would be interesting to compare it to a Cinelli Giro D'Italia for example. To make the bars in the photo 'classic' suggest they are rotated such that the ends of the drops are horizontal!

Reading the article I don't think that is the anatomic. It just says shallow on it so I think that is a picture of the Newton Shallow.

A quick google threw this up as the anatomic version

    Which aint the same.

I'm thinking the pic doesn't match the description. If you Google Deda Newton anatomic (images)you get loads of pics of anatomic bars, and then the exact image you link to.

Am riding with classic bend bars at the moment - have done for my first year of cycling. What is considered the advantage of the anatomic bars and any opinions of those who have ridden with both?

Apologies for the slight thread hijack...

The bar tape is called 'Eleganza' or something like that - ProBikeKit do a version too - not very durable IME and holds the dirt - switched back to Fizik after a few months.

Choice of bars is entirely down to your position on the bike - if you prefer riding on the drops then a classic drop with a long flat section can be more comfortable - as long as the drop isn't too deep.

Thanks for the heads up on the bar tape :D

Back to the original question, anatomic v classic, I have tried both in various makes and i find the anatomic ones do not suit me as i can never get the tops and flat section of the drops in the right place. Either the tops are right and i can't use the flats or the flats are right and the tops are sloping down way too much :?

I'm back to classic curve now, nice and compact http://www.shinybikes.com/product.php?productid=17881 best bars i have tried so far :D
