I recently bought the basic Specialized Sirrus 10 for commuting but am suffering with bad roads and am thinking of upgrading to carbon forks to make life a little easier. Shops seem to distinguish between mountain bike rigids and road forks. Which should I be looking at? And how easy is it for an intermediate bike twiddler to replace?

You probably want cyclo-cross forks. Road forks have mounts for caliper brakes, where as you have V-brakes. MTB forks are designed for 26" wheels and you have 700c. Cyclo-cross typically use 700c wheel with cantilever brakes - which use the same mounts as V-brakes.
