All depends on how 'bobby' the bike is without the standard shock, but personally, if it's one of the new 'boost valve' RP23's, I'd pay the extra.

I've got an Orange Five with one of the new RP23's and I use the various PP settings more than I thought. A few times I've forgotten to switch the PP (on firmest setting) off and have gone down some pretty gnarly stuff and have still had full travel out of the shock - only noticed that I'd left in switched on when I hit small 'chattery' stones on the following fireroad-ey type sections. The firmest PP setting is great for fireroad or tarmac ascents when you're tired.

cheers hoots probally go that root, now what coulor do i go for as just comes in black and lime green,as all my blingy white bits on the crush is white was a bit miffed at the choice of coulor on the heckler as all the other models come in a range of coulors

Oh no, don't get me started on colour choices! (took me ages to decide with the Five).

Having said that, I have seen a bright green Five with white forks etc. and it looked very tasty.

I've just got a new Heckler (in black btw, looks gorgeous) - I went for the Float R as I was already stretching my budget (and the wife's patience  ) by getting the frame in the first place.

Can't compare it to the rp23 but I've certainly got no complaints. Climbs well enough (for a fairly burly AM bike) and it's awesome on the way back down.

If you can justify the extra £130 then it may be worth it but it still performs brilliantly with the Float R IMO.

Currently just using my rs recon 351s maxed at 130mm. I'm having to do the build in stages due to £££, so took a lot of components off my old bike.

Elixir 5s are on their way, after which I'll probably start looking at longer travel forks. handling is fine at 130mm though and it's enough travel for me for the time being.

Can post a pic of the bike later if you want to give you an idea of how the black frame looks in the flesh.

I'd say so. SC website states the travel range is 125-160 with the ideal being 140-160.

Will post a pic tonight when I get in.
  • The Heckler is a much improved bike with a Coil shock than a float.

get the lime green version and you only get two colours as the heckler is the cheapest all-monutain frame at £900

So with the price cuts they also cut colour choices

    In what way?

It rides like a completely different bike, feels more burly and all mountain orientated than it did with the float.

thought of coil also,my mate has one on his heckler but he wants to do the odd uplift or so i just want a decent light enough trail bike to do mostly trails in the lakes as ive done freeridey stuff before and trying to get a little bit fitter
  • Oh and get green, black is *yawn*

Brighter the colour the better :D

The weight trade off for a coil shocked Heckler is well worth it. Square edge hits are better, it jumps better, it doesn't ramp up in berms. You don't have to ride narly stuff to apreciate the difference.

IMO the Heckler should come with a coil shock as standard and the air shock left for the Superlight. Hecklers just don't ride as well with air shocks.

also would it not be better going float at the rear as i have float r"s on the front?? or does it not really matter, nice heckler by the way :)
  • I am not sure where you are getting the frame from but it maybe worth asking if they can do it with a coil preferably either a Fox DHX 5.0 (if they can get one) or RC4.

Or you could just consider it as a future upgrade.

The only benefit you will get with the float at the back is it will match your front one :P

Aye twas me the forks are a new addition to, havent had much chance to come ride with you guys over the last year due to uni work! But since finishing for summer I have been doing some downhill so hence the big forks and coil :D

I guess it depends what you're really going to be using it for.

If you want a specific all mountain set-up that can stray in to DH territory without any issues, a heavier coil shock may be a better choice. If you want a tough XC bike that can also handle bigger hits from time to time then an air shock may well be enough.

Personally I'm more of the latter, I want an XC/trail bike I can ride aggressively with confidence, so far I've not had issues with the Float R but it's still early days tbh.

Whichever way you go it'll still be an awesome ride 8)

I havn't really been out much, can't bring the bike to base yet, so its just in the kitchen at home. Ain't rode with stu or anyone since i left 9 months ago... but still talk, and going for a ride in the lakes end of the month.

and back on subject, I've been wanting a dhx/rp23 for a while now.

tbh guys ile probally go with the air and ile aim for the rp23 as i will be putting £200 towards the frame from the sale of the crush frame so only getting £700 on 0% and like ichabod says i can always upgrade at a later date and the rp will fetch more than the float r on here or e bay so all said LIME GREEN YES!!!!!?????
