any hardtail with semi slicks on it? i commute on a specialized hardrock custom build. goes great on the trails cos it's got R.S recons with 100mm of travel for some XC (ride the full suss for anything big). i've put some semi slicks on there (maxxis wormdrives) and it goes great on the dusty trails and cycle paths/roads :D i average about 15mph on the commute but that's cos i'm a lardy ass

The answer is very dependent on your budget. That may be anything between £300 and £1000 (or more) for your first XC bike.

If its only a short journey to the station you may not even need seni slicks - something along the lines of a good rolling trail tyre will probably suffice like a crossmark.

Plus - if your leaving it at the station then you don't want anything too flash thats going to attract the attention of the local youf/chav/scumbag brigades.

if I were leaving it at the station I would get a second hand cheap as chips shytemobile. Anything remotely nice will be nicked.
