I will be riding this ancient route of pilgrimage from August 29th in aid of the children in Haiti. This route was first travelled by St Augustine in 598, but one of his successors as Archbishop of Canterbury, Sigeric, made travel notes of the route in 990, and these have been recently dug out of the archives in the British Library, helping to re-establish it as a prominent trans-European route.

Just in case it's of use: bikeumbria.com has detailled information on the Via Francigena di San Francisco (I hope that's the one you're doing!). Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be an english translation, but some of the information may be of use.

    Good luck.
